Malone and Miller combine to blank UIW, 6-0

SAN ANTONIO – Riding another dominant performance by Luke Malone, UTSA (10-2) defeated cross-town foe UIW (4-5) Tuesday night, 6-0.

Malone (2-0) went for eight innings tonight, allowing five hits and fanning five while holding the Cardinals scoreless. Both of Malone's starts on the young season have been gems, as he has gone for 8.1 and 8.0 innings and allowed five hits or less in each game while combining to strike out 14. Malone has only allowed one run in 16.1 innings pitched.

Relieving Malone in the top of the ninth inning was Simon Miller. Miller made his third appearance on the year and continued his stellar pitching as well. When his name was called in the ninth, Miller closed out the Cardinals by striking out the side to seal things away. On the year, Miller has pitched for 5.2 innings and has allowed just one hit while striking out 10.

Junior outfielder Shane Sirdashney had another solid day at the plate, as he went 3-4. Garrett Poston and freshman Matt King also had solid outings at the plate, as the two of them each had a 2RBI double to boast.

After four scoreless innings, UTSA got the scoring started in the bottom of the fifth inning. Freshman DH Isaiah Walker slapped a single and gave the Roadrunners a baserunner. Walker was able to advance to second on a wild pitch and to third off of a Chase Keng groundout. Jonathan Tapia stepped up to the plate and hit an RBI sac fly to right field to then score Walker.

UTSA really put the pressure on in the bottom of the sixth. The innings began with a Leyton Barry walk, followed by a Sirdashney single up the middle. With two on, Ryan Flores stepped up and singled as well to load the bases. With the bases loaded, Poston hit a 2RBI double to left field. Then following Poston's lead, King did the same as he doubled down the leftfield line to bring in two more.

The Roadrunners added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning. King kicked off the inning by drawing a walk. He advanced to second on a passed ball and to third on a Tapia groundout. King then scored off an Ian Bailey sac fly to rightfield.
