HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The UTSA softball team swept Southern Miss in Saturday's doubleheader at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
Game one
The Roadrunners defeated the Golden Eagles 5-1 to open the series on Saturday.
Riley Grunberg earned a walk with one out on the board. Madison Washington followed with a double to the left field wall as Grunberg reached home and UTSA led 1-0.
Celeste Loughman and Grunberg opened the third with back-to-back walks. Washington stepped up and doubled again to left field as Loughman scored (2-0) as Grunberg advanced to third. Kindell Brooks hit the ball just over third base to score Grunberg and lead 3-0.
The Golden Eagles scored a run in the fifth from a double to close the gap to two (3-1).
In the sixth, Taylor Medina singled to center field with two outs on the board. Hannah Boring came in to pinch hit and homered to center field as the Roadrunners led 5-1.
Tatum Seith earned the start, pitching 4.1 innings with two strikeouts. Madison Nelson and Clarissa Hernandez also made appearances.
UTSA recorded six hits as the Golden Eagles left 10 on.
Game two
UTSA topped Southern Miss 3-2 in extra innings.
The Golden Eagles were on the board early with a run in the first.
The Roadrunners tied the game in the second. Marena Estell opened with a walk and Erykah Guerrero reached on an error. Taylor Medina also earned a walk to load the bases. With two outs, Celeste Loughman singled up the middle as Estell reached home (1-1).
In the sixth, Marena Estell singled to left field. With two outs, Taylor Medina singled as Lourdes Bacon (pinch runner) scored to take the lead (2-1). In the bottom of the frame, the Golden Eagles scored a run on two hits to tie the game 2-2.
Both teams had a hit in the seventh, but couldn't reach home to push the game to extra innings.
The Roadrunners were back on top in the eighth. With two outs, Medina and Hannah Boring earned back-to-back walks. Kat Ibarra singled to right field as Medina scored to take the lead (3-2). Clarissa Hernandez pitched a 1-2-3 inning to end the game.
UTSA posted six hits with Celeste Loughman leading the team with two.
Jamie Gilbert earned the start, pitching five innings with three strikeouts. Hernandez came in for the final three innings and recorded four strikeouts.
The Roadrunners and the Golden Eagles are back in action tomorrow for a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
