Thornquist leads rout of Islanders in series opener

SAN ANTONIO – Nick Thornquist drove in six runs to lead UTSA baseball to an 11-5 series-opening win at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Friday night at Chapman Field. 
 
UTSA (6-7) opened the series with a rout of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (4-12), using a five-run third inning, two in the fourth and three in the fifth to bust open the lid-lifter. 
 
Thornquist, a senior catcher out of Flower Mound, Texas, went 3-for-4 with six RBI on a pair of doubles, adding a walk. 
 
The Roadrunners also got two hits out of Griffin Paxton, Joshua Lamb and Austin Ochoa, with Ian Bailey and Jonathan Tapia adding knocks. 
 
UTSA starter Luke Malone worked 3.1 innings, allowing three runs on four walks and a strikeout. After a fourth-inning jam, the Roadrunners turned to Hunter Mason (2-2) in relief. The senior sidewinder turned in a strong performance, hurling 5.2 innings, allowing just one earned run with a walk and four strikeouts. 
 
TAMU-CC starter Leo Perez (1-2) allowed 11 runs in 4.1 innings. Sebastian Mejia, JT Moeller and Nick Urbantke also worked in relief. 
 
The series will resume on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Chapman Field.
