No. 9 TCU holds off Roadrunners on Wednesday night

SAN ANTONIO — Kyle Bergeron and Nick Thornquist each had solo home runs for UTSA, but No. 9 TCU built an early lead and held on for a 6-3 nonconference victory on Wednesday at Roadrunner Field.

The Horned Frogs (9-4) used five pitchers to hold the Roadrunners (5-3) to three hits on a windy evening in the Alamo City. Cam Brown allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits and struck out four in five innings to earn the win, while Haylen Green worked two perfect frames at the back end to notch a save.

TCU took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Elijah Nunez led off with a base hit to right field and after a walk and a flyout, Zach Humphreys doubled down the right-field line to plate Nunez before the ball was mishandled, allowing Luke Boyers to cross home and Humphreys to move to third, who later scored on a groundout to first base.

UTSA got on the board in the third after Joshua Lamb led off with a double to the gap in left center, moved to third on a groundout and then scored when a pitch got away from the TCU catcher.

The Horned Frogs got the run right back in the top of the fourth on a solo homer by Conner Shepherd that stayed just inside the pole down the left-field line.

The Roadrunners cut the deficit to 4-2 in the fifth when Bergeron launched a solo shot to left center.

However, TCU responded in its next at-bat with a pair of runs on RBI singles by Phillip Sikes and Hunter Wolfe to make it 6-2.

Thornquist unleashed his solo bomb deep over the fence in left center in the bottom of the sixth to make it 6-3, but TCU's bullpen held the UTSA bats at bay from there.

Ryan Ward was tagged with the loss in his first career start for UTSA.

The Roadrunners will travel to Baton Rouge for a three-game series against LSU this Friday-Sunday.
