Roadrunners defeat Jayhawks 5-3 in home opener

SAN ANTONIO – Multi-run homers from Madison Washington and Brittany Coe helped the Roadrunners defeat Kansas 5-3 in the home opener Friday night at Roadrunner Field.
 
The Jayhawks got on the board first with a solo home run in the top of the fourth. In the bottom of the frame, Kindell Brooks opened with a single to left field and Coe followed behind with a home run to left center as UTSA led 2-1.
 
The Roadrunners added three more runs in the fifth. Celeste Loughman started the frame with a single up the middle. Riley Grunberg doubled to left center as Loughman advanced to third. With one out and two runners on, Madison Washington smacked the ball over the right field wall to extend the lead to four, 5-1.
 
In the top of the sixth, Kansas added two more runs from two hits and an error.
 
Madison Nelson garnered her first win of the season after pitching 5.1 innings with four strikeouts. Clarissa Hernandez came in to pitch 1.2 innings and posted two strikeouts.
 
UTSA had six hits against the Jayhawks.
 
The Roadrunners return to action tomorrow at 3 p.m. against UT Arlington.
