Softball takes down UIW 19-1

SAN ANTONIO – Thirteen hits in five innings helped the Roadrunners take down UIW 19-1 Wednesday evening at H-E-B Field.
 
The Roadrunners (13-8) took an early lead in the first with four runs. Celeste Loughman opened the game with a solo homer to center field. Madison Washington earned a walk and Kindell Brooks followed with a double to left center. Taylor Medina also earned a walk and Victoria Villarreal was hit by a pitch with bases loaded as Washington scored. Hannah Boring doubled as Villarreal and Medina reached home to lead 4-0. The Cardinals added a run in the bottom of the frame from a double (4-1).
 
UTSA added four more runs in the second to push the lead. Madison Washington reached on a catcher's interference. With one out on the board, back-to-back doubles from Riley Grunberg and Taylor Medina scored two runs as the Roadrunners led 6-1. Villarreal hit a two-run homer to right field, scoring Medina and increasing the lead to seven (8-1).
 
In the third, the Roadrunners added nine more runs to extend their lead. Paige Pacher opened with a single and Loughman followed with a double to center as Pacher scored (9-1). Washington earned a walk and Kindell Brooks hit a home run to left field for a three-run homer to lead 12-1. With one out, Medina reached on an error, followed by back-to-back walks from Villarreal and Coerver to load the bases. Pacher singled to center field as Medina scored and Loughman followed with a walk as Villarreal reached home (14-1). For the second time in the game, Washington reached on catcher's interference as Boring scored (15-1) and Kindell Brooks doubled to left center as Loughman and Pacher scored to lead 17-1.
 
The Roadrunners scored two more runs in the fifth. With one out on the board, Loughman and Kaitlyn Morado had back-to-back walks and Brittany Coe reached on a fielder's choice as runners advanced. Kylea Nix singled as Gabby Leggington (pinch runner) scored to lead 18-1. Closing out the inning, Villarreal singled past the first baseman as Morado reached home.
 
UTSA recorded 13 hits, while the Cardinal had six with three errors.
 
Clarissa Hernandez improved to 2-1 on the season, pitching all five innings with two strikeouts and allowing just one run.
