Softball went 1-1 on opening day

LAFAYETTE, La. - The UTSA softball team went 1-1 on opening day at the 34th Annual Louisiana Classics.
 
Game 1: Ball State
Three runs in the seventh pushed the Roadrunners past the Cardinals to open the season 1-0.
 
The Cardinals got on the board first with two home runs in the first inning.
 
With bases loaded in the bottom of the second, Madison Washington was walked to score Victoria Villarreal and put UTSA on the board.
 
In the tip of the third, Ball State added another run from an error to increase the lease to three, 4-1.
 
Freshman Taylor Medina reached first on a fielding error in the fifth as Riley Grunberg reached home (2-4).
 
In the seventh, the Roadrunners scored three runs to take the lead. Washington opened the inning with a walk, followed by a double from Kindell Brooks. Grunberg singled to center as runners advanced and Washington scored. With one out, Victoria Villlarreal singled through the right side as Brooks scored to tie the game. Lauren Coerver singled up the middle to score Ciarra Matta (pinch runner), take the lead and garner the victory.
 
Freshman Erika Cortez picked up her first collegiate win.

Game two: Louisiana
The Roadrunners fell to No. 10 Louisiana 8-0 in five innings.
 
The Ragin' Cajuns scored two runs in the third to take the lead.
 
In the sixth, Louisiana scored six more runs to lead 8-0 and take the win.
 
UTSA recorded three hits from Celeste Loughman, Madison Washington and Lauren Coerver, but couldn't ever reach home.
 
The Roadrunners return to action tomorrow when they take on Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Louisiana once again.
