Roadrunners fall short in comeback

BEAUMONT, Texas – The UTSA softball team fell short in a 6-7 comeback to Lamar Tuesday evening.
 
Celeste Loughman opened the game with a walk. She then stole second and reached third on an error. Madison Washington had a ground out RBI as Loughman scored to put UTSA on the board. In the bottom of the frame, Lamar tied the game from two singles and a double.
 
In the second, a two-run homer from the Cardinals put them in the lead, 2-1.
 
Loughman earned another walk in the third, then stole second once again. Washington hit a sac fly to right field as Loughman reached third and Riley Grunberg followed with a home run to right center as the Roadrunners led 3-2. Lamar scored two more runs in the inning to take back the lead (4-3).
 
In the fourth, the Cardinals scored another three runs from a single, a triple, a walk and an error to extend the lead to four (7-3).
 
The Roadrunners scored three runs in the top of the six to close the gap. Grunberg hit her second home run of the game with a solo homer to left field (4-7). Taylor Medina followed with a single down the left line and Victoria Villarreal earned a walk. With one out, Kylea Nix singled to score Medina (6-7). Kindell Brooks stepped up and walked to load the bases. With a full count, Loughman also earned a walk as Villarreal scored (6-7). A strikeout ended the inning.
 
Madison Nelson fell to 2-2 on the season, pitching 2.2 innings with two strikeouts.
 
UTSA returns to action March 13-15 at Louisiana Tech.
