Roadrunners improve to 2-2 on the season

LAFAYETTE, La. – The UTSA softball team closed out day two of the 34th annual Louisiana Classics defeating Arkansas-Pine Bluff 9-0 and falling to No. 8 Louisiana 1-11 on Saturday.
 
Game one: Arkansas-Pine Bluff
Four runs in the first helped UTSA secure its second win of the season over the Lady Lions on Saturday.
 
In the first, Celeste Loughman opened with a walk, then stole second. Madison Washington followed with a walk. With one out, Riley Grunberg singled through the left side and runners advanced as Loughman scored on an error. Taylor Medina hit a sac fly to score Washington (2-0). Victoria Villarreal reached on an error as runners advanced and Lauren Coerver doubled to left-center as Villarreal and Grunberg reached home to lead 4-0 after the first.
 
The Roadrunners added another run in the fifth. Medina opened with a double and Villarreal followed with a line out as Media advanced to third on a wild pitch. With two outs, Kylea Nix reached on a throwing error as Medina scored. UTSA led 5-0 after the fifth.
 
In the top of the seventh, Grunberg earned a walk to start things off. Medina hit a single through the left side as Grunberg advanced to second. Villarreal reached on an error as runners advanced and Grunberg scored. Nix earned a walk as Medina scored to increase the lead (7-0). Marena Estell had a ground out as Villarreal found home and Loughman followed with a sac fly to score Coerver. The inning ended with a popup as the Roadrunners claimed the game.
 
Madison Nelson picked up her first win of the season, pitching 4.2 innings with three strikeouts and only allowing three hits. The UTSA defense left seven on base, not allowing the Lady Lions to reach home.
 
Game two: No. 8 Louisiana
Louisiana scored eight runs in the fourth to claim the 11-1 win Saturday evening.


The Ragin' Cajuns got on the board in the third to lead 3-0. The inning opened with a walk, followed by a double up the middle. With two outs, Louisiana had a three-run homer to left field to take the lead.
 
In the fourth, five walks, three singles and a grand slam from the Ragin' Cajuns added eight more runs to secure the win.
 
Riley Grunberg recorded the only run on the board for UTSA with a solo home run in the top of the fifth.
 
Freshman Erika Cortez recorded her first career start and pitched 3.2 innings. Louisiana left seven runners on base as the UTSA defense stepped up and had 12 putouts.
 
The Roadrunners return to the field tomorrow to take on Prairie View A&M in Lake Charles. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
