Fourth-quarter surge pushes the the Miners past the Roadrunners

SAN ANTONIO – Evelyn Omemmah scored a career-high 17 points as the Roadrunners dropped a 59-85 decision to the Miners on Thursday.
 
In the first quarter, UTEP (14-11, 7-7 C-USA) opened with a 5-0 run until a layup from Timea Toth at the 7:52 mark put UTSA (6-19, 2-12 C-USA) on the board. Adryana Quezada made a layup to bring the Roadrunners within one (4-5) until the Miners found the basket once again. With 5:21 remaining, Charlene Mass made a 3-ppinter to put UTSA in the lead (9-7). UTEP hit a 9-0 run to regain the lead. Toth broke the scoring drought with two free throws. Both teams continued to find the basket and with two seconds on the clock, Karrington Donald made a 3-pointer as the Roadrunners trailed 18-21 after the first.
 
Both teams scored 16 points each in the second quarter to keep it a close game. For about three minutes of the quarter, UTSA went on a 10-7 run to close the gap to two (28-30), but a short scoring drought allowed the Miners to get ahead by seven (28-35). In the final two minutes, UTSA outscored UTEP 6-2 as it trailed 34-37 at the half.
 
The game remained close through the third quarter as the Miners scored just one more point (19-18) than the Roadrunners. Through the first six minutes, UTEP hit a 9-8 run as UTSA stayed within six points. With 2:30 remaining on the clock, UTSA recorded nine points as the Miners led 56-52 going to the final 10 minutes.
 
In the fourth, UTEP outscored UTSA 29-7 to hold onto its lead and garner the win.
