No.22 Texas holds off UTSA

SAN ANTONIO – A Five-run fifth propels No. 22 Texas past UTSA Tuesday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

The Roadrunners (3-1) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the opening frame but they were unable to deliver a potential knock-out blow.

Back-to-back singles and a walk loaded the bases with no outs,\ before the Longhorns' (4-0) hurler, Cole Quintanilla, limited the damage by inducing a ground out and striking out the next two hitters.

Nick Thornquist led off the top of the fourth with a single but was replaced at first on a fielder's choice off the bat of Taylor Barber. On a full count, Barber took off for second, sliding in safely with his first stolen base of the season. The throw by Texas' backstop tailed away from the shortstop and into right field, allowing Barber to advance another 90 feet. A second miscue on the play, this time by the right fielder, who airmailed and hit the screen out of play pushed the Roadrunners out in front 2-0.

In the home half of the frame, UTSA utilized three pitchers in hopes of getting out of the inning with as little damage as possible. When the dust settled, the Longhorns registered five runs on four hits and two walks.

The Roadrunners threatened in the top of the seventh. Singles by Joshua Lamb and Dylan Rock placed runners on first and second with two outs. Bryan Sturges lined a single into right field but the defender scooped the ball off the turf and fired a strike to home to cut down Lamb and end the threat.

A lead-off knock in the home half of the seventh came around to close out the scoring as the Texas bullpen retired the final six batters in order.
