SAN MARCOS, Texas – The UTSA softball team improved to 6-4 on the season with two wins on Saturday at the Bobcat Classic.
Game one: Saint Louis
Madison Washington hit two home runs to help the Roadrunners defeat Saint Louis, 7-6.
UTSA was on the board early with two runs on the top of the first. Celeste Loughman singled up the middle and Washington followed with a home run to lead 2-0.
In the second, Victoria Villarreal opened with a triple. With one out, freshman Brittany Coe hit a sac fly to score Villarreal as the Roadrunners led 3-0.
Saint Louis got on the board in the bottom of the third from a single, a walk and two wild pitches (3-1).
Villarreal started the top of the fourth with a walk and Lauren Coerver followed with a single. Paige Pacher reached on a fielder's choice as Coerver was thrown out at second and Villarreal reached third. Loughman singled as Villarreal scored another run for UTSA (4-1). The Billikens added another run in the bottom of the frame to trail 2-4 going to the fifth.
In the bottom of the fifth, SLU scored six runs from five hits to take the lead (4-6).
The Roadrunners tied the game at six in the sixth inning. With one out on the board, Pacher was walked. Washington hit it out of the park to right field for her second two-run homer of the game.
UTSA added one more run in the seventh to take the win. Taylor Medina was walked and Coerver doubled to left field as Medina scored to take the lead, 7-6, and take the win.
Makenzie Carpenter improved to 2-1 on the season, pitching 2.1 innings with one strikeout, after replacing Madison Nelson.
Game two: Wichita State
Two runs in the fifth inning pushed the Roadrunners past the Shockers.
Through the first four innings, UTSA recorded two hits and left six on base. Freshman Erika Cortez pitched two 1-2-3 innings to keep the Shockers off the board.
In the fifth, Celeste Loughman tripled to center field and Madison Washington followed with a sac fly to score Loughman. Kindell Brooks and Riley Grunberg earned back-to-back walks to put the Roadrunners in scoring position. Taylor Medina singled as runners advanced. With the bases loaded, Victoria Villarreal was hit by a pitch as Brooks reached home to lead 2-0. Three up, three down in the bottom of the frame closed out the inning.
Both teams had a hit and left a runner on base in the seventh to end the game.
Cortez improved to 2-2 on the season, pitching all seven innings with nine strikeouts.
The Roadrunners closeout the weekend with one final game on Sunday against Saint Louis. First pitch is set for 10 a.m.
