SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA softball team opened the home slate with a 6-2 win over Houston Baptist Wednesday evening at Roadrunner Field.
The Roadrunners improve to 4-2 on the season, while the Huskies fall to 4-2.
UTSA was on the board early with a run in the bottom of the first. Celeste Loughman led with a single to center field. Madison Washington was walked and Loughman got caught stealing to put the first out on the board. Kindell Brooks grounded out to second base as Washington advanced to scoring position. Riley Grunberg followed with a single to center, advancing Washington to third. Taylor Medina stepped up and hit a double to left field as Washington scored. UTSA led 1-0 after the first.
In the top of the third, the Huskies tied the game at one from two singles and a walk.
Two home runs in the bottom of the frame put UTSA back in the lead. Washington singled through the left side with one out. Brooks followed with a home run to right-center. With two outs, Medina hit a solo homer down the left line as the Roadrunners led 4-1.
The Roadrunners added two more runs in the fourth, pushing the lead even further. With two outs, UTSA earned three walks in a row for Paige Pacher, Loughman and Washington. With bases loaded, Brooks singled to right center as Pacher and Loughman reach home to lead 6-1.
The Huskies recorded a home run in the top of the seventh to close the gap (6-2), but Roadrunner defense held them off as they left three on to end the game.
Clarissa Hernandez picked up her first win, pitching the entire game with seven strikeouts.
The Roadrunners return to action tomorrow for the first day of the Bobcat Classic at Texas State. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. against the Bobcats.
