Roadrunners defeat Panthers in second half surge

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA women's basketball team scored 44 points in the second half to defeat FIU 60-45 and capture the first conference win of the season Saturday afternoon.
 
UTSA improves to 5-8 overall and 1-1 in C-USA action, while FIU falls to 3-10, 0-2
 
The beginning of the game started slow as neither team could find the basket until FIU scored at 8:02. The Roadrunners didn't score until 3:07 when Adryana Quezada put up the first points. Charlene Mass hit a 3-pointer at 2:41 to take a 5-4 lead, but 30 seconds later FIU scored to regain the lead. Both teams hit multiple scoring droughts throughout the quarter and the Panthers led 10-8 after the first.
 
Opening the second, Evelyn Omemmah made a free throw to bring the Roadrunners within one (9-10). UTSA hit another scoring drought until Donald made a jump shot at 5:09 to cut the FIU lead to five (11-16). Mass made a layup to bring the Roadrunners within three (13-17) as the Panthers hit a scoring drought. UTSA trailed 16-21 going to the locker room.
 
The Roadrunners came out of halftime on fire as Donald hit back-to-back 3-pointers to take the lead (22-21). The game stayed close as both teams found the basket until UTSA went up by six from a layup by Timea Toth at 1:18. The Roadrunners put up 25 points in the quarter to lead 41-34 going to the fourth.
 
In the fourth, Mikayla Woods made a jump shot at 7:46 to put the Roadrunners up by nine (43-34). Through the first 5:30 minutes, UTSA went on a 9-4 run to push their lead. With 3:17 remaining, Mass made a layup and drew a foul as the Roadrunners led 53-42. The Panthers hit another scoring drought as UTSA went on an 8-0 run to retain the lead and garner the victory.
 
Game Notes

  • At the half, only 37 points had been scored combined, making it the lowest number scored this season for the Roadrunners and their opponents.
  • Karrington Donald led the team with 18 points and recorded her fifth double-digit scoring game this season. She also tied her career high with four 3-pointers for the fifth time.
  • The Roadrunners garnered their first conference win of the season

 
The Roadrunners return to action next week when they travel to Louisiana Tech on Jan. 9.
