Avdeyev era opens with UTSA in California

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA men's tennis program will open a new era on Saturday and Sunday with the start of the 2020 season, facing UC Davis on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. CT and Pacific on Sunday at 12 p.m.

The opening weekend marks the first matches under UTSA first-year coach Sergey Avdeyev, who joined the Roadrunners on Nov. 1, 2019 after a decorated run as the associate head coach at league-tennis power Old Dominion. The 2019 ITA Atlantic Region Assistant Coach of the Year, Avdeyev is assisted by former Texas assistant coach Cullen Dees, who helped lead the Longhorns to the national title last year.

UTSA heads into the season led by a three-member senior class, including Kai Breitbach (Kaarst, Germany), Patrick Poestinger (Ennsdorf, Austria) and Juri Reckow (Hamburg, Germany).

Poestinger enters the season ranked No. 83 in the ITA's single rankings, the second straight preseason the Roadrunners have had a player ranked in the top 100 in the singles rankings of ITA, with Breitbach earning a preseason ranking last year.

In addition to the veteran trio, UTSA welcomes backs All-Conference USA performer, Javier Rodriguez (Trujillo, Peru), a junior, who is joined on the roster by his brother, Sebastian Rodriguez (Trujillo, Peru), a freshman.

UTSA has also added freshmen Joao Alcantra (Santos, Brazil) and Kaito Nishihara (Austin, Texas), along with returnees Alan Sanson (Santiago, Chile) and Joao Ceolin (Palotina, Brazil).
