SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Roadrunners fell short in an overtime thriller to Texas State, 69-74 Wednesday evening.
UTSA falls to 3-5 on the season, while the Bobcats improve to 5-2.
The first two and a half minutes were slow until Charlene Mass put UTSA on the board with a free throw. Texas State scored to take the lead and earn a foul until the Roadrunners tied the game at three. The game remained tied until back-to-back layups from the Bobcats gave them a 7-3 lead. Timea Toth put UTSA in the lead 10-9 from free throws, but TXST continued to score to keep it a close matchup. Karrington Donald broke a tie with 14 seconds left, but a last-second 3-pointer put the Bobcats in the lead 17-16 at the end of the first.
Adryana Quezada made a jumper just 20 seconds into the second quarter to put the Roadrunners back in the lead. Both teams continued to battle for the ball and find the basket. The Roadrunner were never more than seven points ahead of the Bobcats throughout the quarter. UTSA shot 52.9 percent from the field and led 36-33 going to the locker room.
The Roadrunners went on an 8-0 in the first part of the third quarter and a jumper from Evelyn Omemmah put them in a nine-point lead (44-35), the largest of the game. UTSA hit a scoring drought as Texas State started to close the gap. Mass broke the drought with a free throw at 2:14 as the Roadrunners led 47-42. The Bobcats took the lead with 1:22 remaining off a 3-pointer and led 48-47 going to the final 10 minutes.
In the first minute of the fourth quarter, Mikayla Woods made three free throws to tie the game at 50. The two teams continued to fight throughout the quarter as they were tied at 62 at the end of regulation. In overtime, Texas State gained a three-point lead until Woods made a jumper to trail by one, 67-68. Quezada tied the game at 68 with a free throw until the Bobcats hit a 4-0 run to lead 72-68 with 43 seconds remaining. Woods scored the final point for the Roadrunners off a free throw with three seconds on the clock. A foul was drawn and TXST made the final two points with less than a second on the clock to take the 74-69 win.
The Roadrunners return to action on Sunday when they host former Southland Conference foe Sam Houston State at 2 p.m.
