SAN ANTONIO – Scoring 30 points in the first quarter, the Roadrunners opened the season with a 73-44 victory over Concordia Texas Wednesday evening.
UTSA opened the season 1-0 and shot 43.5 percent from the field.
Tija Hawkins opened the game with back-to-back layups as the Roadrunners started with an 8-0 run. With 6:26 remaining in the quarter, UTSA led 12-3. Coming off the bench, freshman Karley Larson scored 10 points and went 3 for 3 from the arch to help the Roadrunners lead 30-8 at the end of the quarter.
In the second quarter, both teams scored nine points. UTSA led 39-17 going into the locker room.
UTSA hit a scoring drought coming out of the half, but went on an 8-0 run in the last five minutes of the third quarter. Evelyn Omemmah led the team with four points as UTSA went into the final quarter with an 18 point lead (51-33).
The Roadrunners opened the fourth quarter with an 11-0 run and held the Tornados to just 11 points in the final 10 minutes of the game. In a span of a little over a minute, Hawkins made three layups in a row to help the Roadrunners finish with a 73-44 victory.
