Men’s Tennis announces 2020 spring schedule

SAN ANTONIO – UTSA men's tennis will face a stiff challenge in its 2020 schedule, announced by first-year head coach Sergey Avdeyev on Wednesday afternoon.

The Roadrunners will host seven foes at the UTSA Tennis Center during its 2020 spring schedule. UTSA will face 10 road tests and will participate in neutral-site competitions in Dallas, Las Vegas and Hattiesburg, Miss.

"We are excited to announce 2020 spring schedule," Avdeyev said. "We have arguable strongest schedule UTSA had in the last decade. We have around 14 ranked teams we will face, including several tennis powerhouses like Texas and Texas Tech. Certainly, there are plenty of opportunities for our team to be in a position to make the NCAA Tournament. We have to make sure we take care of ourselves over the break and come back ready play."

UTSA kicks off its 2020 season on Jan. 25 at UC Davis and will continue a west-coast swing with a Jan. 26 matchup at Pacific in Forest Grove, Ore.

The Roadrunners will then participate in SMU's Feb. 1 event, facing the Mustangs and will then face Portland on Feb. 2 in Dallas.

UTSA faces Louisiana-Lafayette on Feb. 9 in Lafayette, La., before opening its home schedule on Feb. 19 with cross-town foe UIW at 2 p.m. at the UTSA Tennis Center.

UTSA will host Nebraska on Feb. 22 at 2 p.m., before hitting the road for a three-match swing through the Lone Star State. UTSA will face Texas on Feb. 23 in Austin, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Feb. 26 in Corpus Christi and Texas Tech on March 1 in Lubbock.

UTSA will host Butler on March 14, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on March 18 and Wichita State on March 20 as part of a season-long, three-match homestand.

The Roadrunners will then travel to the east coast to face Old Dominion at 12 p.m. CT on March 26 and Richmond in Richmond, Va., on March 27.

UTSA will participate in the Conference USA Pod Play event on April 3-5 in Hattiesburg, Miss., joining Rice, Southern Miss and UAB.

The Roadrunners will honor its three-man senior class, including Kai Breitbach (Kaarst, Germany), Patrick Poestinger (Ennsdorf, Austria) and Juri Reckow (Hamburg, Germany), on April 11 vs. Abilene Christian at the UTSA Tennis Center.

The C-USA Championships are hosted by Charlotte on April 17-19 and the NCAA Championships will be held in Stillwater, Okla., on May 1-2.

UTSA is under the direction of first-year head coach Sergey Avdeyev, who joins the Roadrunners after serving as the associate head coach for league powerhouse Old Dominion. A former star player at Oklahoma, Avdeyev is joined on the staff by former Texas assistant Cullen Dees, who came to the Alamo City after helping lead Texas to the 2019 NCAA Championship.

The Roadrunners return several standouts, including the seniors Breitbach, Poestinger and Reckow, with Poestinger ranked 84th in the ITA singles rankings in the preseason. UTSA also returns 2019 All-Conference USA performer Javier Rodriguez, who earned all-league honors in his debut season after transferring from Purdue for 2018-19.
