Roadrunners outlast Cardinals, 63-56

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA women's basketball team posted a 63-56 victory over UIW Monday evening.
 
The Roadrunners improve to 2-0 on the season, while the Cardinal fall to 1-1.
 
UTSA started the game with a layup from freshman Adryana Quezada before UIW tied it a two. The Roadrunners then went on a 6-0 run. After a layup from the Cardinals at the 6:29 mark, UTSA posted an 8-0 run from 3-pointers from Quezada and Karrington Donald and a layup from Mikayla Woods. The Roadrunners continued to score the remainder of the quarter and led 29-7 going into the second quarter shooting 68.8 percent from the field and Quezada leading the team with seven points (4 for 4).
 
In the second quarter, the Cardinals outscored the Roadrunners 16-12. Quezada recorded four points to hit her first double-digit game with 11 in the first half. UTSA led 41-23 going to the locker room.
 
During the first five minutes of the third quarter, the Roadrunners went on a 6-0 run before hitting a scoring drought. Free throws from Timea Toth put UTSA back in action as it led 50-30 with four minutes remaining. Woods put up seven points in the quarter, hitting her first career double-digit game and helping the Roadrunners lead 57-36 going into the final 10 minutes.
 
UIW dominated the fourth quarter, posting an 11-0 run and recording 20 points, closing the gap on UTSA. The Cardinals were within six points until two free throws from Charlene Mass and a last-minute layup from Tija Hawkins helped garner the win for the Roadrunners.
