SAN ANTONIO – With the second run-rule game of the weekend, the Roadrunners claimed the series against UTEP with an 8-0 win on Sunday.
UTSA improves to 20-27 overall and 8-13 in C-USA action, while UTEP falls to 15-31 and 8-13 in conference.
Celeste Loughman opened the bottom of the first with a lead-off triple to right field. Bailee Baldwin was walked, then stole second as Loughman stole home to put a run on the board for the Roadrunners.
The Roadrunners added five more runs in the bottom of the second. Elexus Trenkle singled to left field and Paige Pacher picked up a walk. Lauren Coerver singled to right field. With bases loaded, Celeste Loughman was walked as Trenkle scored. Madison Washington hit a grand slam to center field, scoring Pacher, Coerver and Loughman. UTSA led 6-0 after the second.
Washington hit her second home run of the game to left center as the Roadrunners led 7-0. Victoria Villarreal doubled down the right field line, then advanced to third. Kylea Nix singled to left as Villarreal scored. UTSA led 8-0 at the end of the fourth.
UTEP had one hit and left one on in the top of the fifth to end the game.
The Roadrunners recorded seven hits, while the Miners had five.
Clarissa Hernandez picked up her ninth win of the season, after pitching 5.0 innings, allowing five hits with four strikeouts.
UTSA returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Baylor. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
