Roadrunners and Miners split doubleheader

SAN ANTONIO – The Roadrunners and the Miners split the doubleheader on Sayurday afternoon.
 
UTEP (15-30, 8-12 C-USA) won the first game, 7-4, while UTSA (19-27, 7-13 C-USA) swept the second 11-0 in five innings.
 
Game 1
The Miners opened the game with a single to first by Pate Cathey. Kacey Duffield reached on an error and Cortney Smith grounded as runners advanced on an error. Pamala Baber singled to center field, advancing runners and scoring Cathey. A popup ended the inning.
 
UTEP added one more in the top of the second. Cathey singled, then advanced to second on an error. Kasey Flores singled as Cathey scored. The Miners led 2-0 after the top of the frame. With two outs, Elexus Trenkle singled to center field. Brycen Blinco hit a two-run homer to score Trenkle and tie the game. Celeste Loughman followed with a double to right field, reaching scoring position. A strikeout ended the inning.
 
The Miners added three more runs in the top of the third off a two-run homer and a double.
A two-run homer to left field from Baber scored Smith and increase the lead to two (4-2). Bryanna Molina reached on an error, then reached to second on the throw. Linda Garcia doubled to right field as Molina scored. UTEP led 5-2 after the third.
 
In the top of the fourth, Smith hit a solo home run to left field, increasing the lead to four (6-2). In the bottom of the frame, Blinco was walked and Celeste Loughman hit a fly out to center. Bailee singled up the middle and Madison Washington followed with a walk as runners advanced. Victoria Villarreal singled to right center as Blinco and Baldwin scored. The Roadrunners trailed 4-6 going to the fifth.
 
Flores hit a solo home run to right center as the Miners led 7-4 after the sixth.
 
The Roadrunners recorded seven hits, while the Miners had 11.
 
Game 2
The Roadrunners started off the game with a three-run homer from Riley Grunberg. Celeste opened the inning with a walk. With one out, Madison Washington was walked as well. Riley Grunberg hit a three-run homer to right center, scoring Loughman and Washington as the Roadrunners led, 3-0 after the first.
 
Madison Washington opened the bottom of the third with a walk. Victoria Villarreal followed with a two-run homer to center field, increasing the lead to five. Riley Grunberg, Kylea Nix, Elexus Trenkle, Brycen Blinco and Bailee Baldwin all scored on walks. Paige Pacher scored on a wild pitch. The Roadrunners led 11-0 after the third.

The Roadrunners posted four hits, while the Miners had three. UTSA recorded 13 walks, just one shy of the school record.
 
UTSA and UTEP return to the field tomorrow for the series finale. First pitch for Senior Sunday is 1 p.m.
