DENTON, Texas – North Texas sweeps Friday's doubleheader to take the series.
The Mean Green won the first game 3-2 and the second 4-3. UTSA falls to 17-25 on the season and 6-11 in C-USA action.
Game 1
In the bottom of the second, Rhylie Makawe hit a single over the pitcher's head. Sally Gastelo followed with a single passed shortstop as Makawe advanced to second. Hanna Rebar hit a ground out as runners advanced to reach scoring position. Nicole Ochotnicki reached third on an error as Makawe and Gastelo scored. The Mean Green led 2-0 after the second.
Bailee Baldwin hit her seventh double of the season in the top of the fifth with two outs on the board. A foul fly out ended the top of the frame. Rebar hit a single to left field. Ochotnick hit a sac bunt to advance Rebar to second. Camille Grahmannhit hit a single down the left line, then stole second. Katie Clark reached on a fielder's choice as Rebar was tagged out at home. A ground out closed the inning.
Gregory opened the bottom of the sixth with a fly out to second. Tayla Evans singled up the middle, then reached second on a wild pitch. Makawe hit a single to center and Evans advanced to third. Makawe advanced to second and Evans reached home to put another run on the board for the Mean Green.
With one out in the top of the seventh, Celete Loughman singled to left field, then advanced to second on a wild pitch, but couldn't reach home. The fly out and a strikeout ended the game.
The Roadrunners had four hits and one error, while North Texas had seven runs and an error.
Game 2
Opening game two, Celeste Loughman grounded out and Bailee Baldwin singled to right field. Madison Washington hit a single up the middle. Riley Grunberg reached on a fielder's choice as Washington was tagged out at second and Baldwin advanced to third. Victoria Villarreal struck out to close the top of the frame. North Texas was on the board early with two runs in the bottom of the first. Katie Clark flied out to right field. Harley Perella singled to and Lacy Gregory followed with a single to left. Tayla Evans grounded out. Sally Gastelo singled to center field as Perella and Gregory scored. The Mean Green led 2-0 after the first.
In the bottom of the fourth, Gerecke struck out and Ochotnicki was walked. Young hit a sac bunt to advance Ochotnicki to scoring position. Clark doubled to left center as North Texas added another run.
Kylea Nix opened the top of the fifth with a single passed the shortstop. Brycen singled to left as Lauren Coerver (pinch runner) advanced to second. Celeste Loughman hit a sac bunt as runners advanced and Bailee Baldwin hit a popup to second. With two outs, Madison Washington singled to left as field as Coerver and Blinco scored. Riley Grunberg singled to left center and Washington moved to second. The Roadrunners trailed by one going to the bottom of the frame.
With two outs, Gastelo singled to third, then stole second. Jenna Goodrich was walked and Gerecke followed with a single to center as Goodrich advanced to third and Gastelo scored. A popup ended the inning as North Texas led 4-2 going to the sixth.
Bailee Baldwin hit a double to center field in the top of the seventh. A single from Washington to center field scored Baldwin as the Roadrunners trailed by one once again. Riley Grunberg singled to left center as Abigail Haston (pinch runner) advanced to second. A wild pitch moved runners up to scoring position. A fly out ended the game.
UTSA recorded 10 hits, while the North Texas had eight.
The Roadrunners and the Mean Green return for the series finale tomorrow at noon.
