Islanders take victory with run in seventh

CORPUS CHRISTI – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi scored one run in the bottom of the seventh to capture the win Wednesday afternoon at Chapman Field.
 
The Roadrunners fall to 17-23 on the season, while the Islanders improve to 8-35.
 
In the top of the second, Kaitlin Lopez opened the inning with a double to left center. Elexus Trenkle was hit by a pitch and Paige Pacher followed with a single to left field. Kylea Nix hit a ground out to second, but a double play kept the Roadrunners from scoring. With two outs, Ashleigh Sgambelluri reached first on an error. As Kandace Johnson was up to bat, Sgambelluri left the base early, adding the third out of the inning.
 
With two outs, Bailee Baldwin hit a triple to right center in the top of the third to move up in the rankings, tying for second with eight career-triples. Madison Washington was walked, but a popup ended the inning.
 
In the top of the seventh, Paige Pacher singled up the middle. She then stole second and reached third on a wild pitch as Kylea Nix was walked. A foul popup and a ground ended the top of the frame.
 
Sammi Thomas doubled to right field, then reached third on the throw. Kennedy Johnson hit a sac fly to right field, scoring Thomas and ending the game.
 
UTSA recorded five runs and one error, while the Islanders had three hits.
 
The Roadrunners return to action on Friday at North Texas. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
