Marshall takes series in two shutouts

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall won the series shutting out the Roadrunners in both games of the doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
 
The Roadrunners fall to 14-14  (5-3 C-USA) on the season, while Marshall improves to 21-8 (4-1 C-USA).
 
Game 1
The Thundering Herd takes game one 5-0 with two-run homers in the second and the fourth.
 
Katie Adams singled to right field opening the bottom of the second.  Sierra Huerta hit a two-run homer to left center, scoring Adams as Marshall took a 2-0 lead. A foul out to left field, a popup to second and a strikeout ended the inning.
 
With two outs and one on, Briana Daiss hit a double to left field as Huerta scored in the bottom of the fourth. Blakely Burch followed with a two-run homer to left as the Thundering Herd increased their lead to five.
 
Riley Grunberg had the lone hit for the Roadrunners with a single up the middle in the top of the seventh.
 
Throughout the game, both teams pitched a 1-2-3 inning three times.
 
Marshall had five runs on five hits, while UTSA posted a hit and an error.
 
Game 2
With one out, Bailee Baldwin posted the first hit for the Roadrunners with a single down the right field line. She then stole second to reach scoring position, but a popup to shortstop and a ground out to third, closed the top of the frame. Giammarino singled to left field and Heurta followed with a single down the left line. Runners advanced on a ground out to first. Mya Stevenson hit a sacrifice fly to center field as Giammarino scored to put the Thundering Herd on the board. Katie Adams reached first on an error as Huerta scored. Daiss reached on a fielder's choice and Adams was thrown out at second. Marshall led 2-0 after the first.
 
In the top of the second, Madison Washington singled up the middle and Victoria Villarreal was walked, but a popup and two strikeouts closed the top of the frame. Blakely Burch reached first after being hit by a pitch, then reached second on a wild pitch. Hayden Ellis singled past shortstop as Burch advanced to third. Ellis then stole second and Armani Brown singled to the pitcher as Burch scored. Brown stole second as Giammarino singled to left field, scoring Ellis. Another stolen base for Marshall moves runners to scoring position. Aly Harrell flied out to center and Brown was tagged out at third to end the inning. Marshall led 4-0 after the second.
 
Inning 3
With two outs, Kindell Brooks hit a single to left field and Riley Grunberg followed with a single to center. Madison Washington grounded out to the pitcher to end the top of the frame.
 
Stevenson opened with a walk and Briana Daiss hit a two-run homer to left field. Burch was walked and Ellis struck out swinging as Burch stole second. Armani Brown hit a double to left field as Burch scored.
 
In the top of the fourth, Victoria Villarreal singled of the second base and Kaitlin Lopez reached first on a fielder's choice as Villarreal was tagged out at second. Clarissa Hernandez pitched a 1-2-3 inning as Marshall led 7-0 after the fourth.
 
In the fifth, the Roadrunners had one hit and left one on and Marshall had one hit.
 
Opening the top of the sixth, Madison Washington hit a single to right field. Villarreal grounded out to second base and Hannah Boring (pinch runner) was thrown out for a double play. Marshall left one on after an error.
 
The Roadrunners and the Thundering Herd return to action tomorrow for the final game of the series. First pitch is set for 11 a.m. CT.
