SAN ANTONIO -- Winners of five of its last six games, UTSA baseball will hit the road for the first time in 2019, traveling to face No. 22 Texas at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at UFCU Disch-Faulk Field. The game will be televised live on Longhorn Network.
The UTSA baseball team completed a five-game week with a 4-1 record, including a 3-1 mark in a series with Dartmouth to conclude the second week of the 2019 season.
UTSA (5-3) has won five of its last six games after opening the year 0-2. The Roadrunners also earned a 10-7 midweek win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi last week.
The Roadrunners have posted a 4.50 team ERA through eight games and 70 innings, allowing 69 hits and walking 29, fanning 63. UTSA has hit .321 with a .469 slugging percentage and three homers over 57 runs scored.
UTSA has used senior righty Karan Patel (0-2, 4.09 ERA), junior right-hander Slater Foust (1-0, 0.00 ERA), senior righty Palmer Wenzel (2-0, 1.32 ERA), senior southpaw Bradley Griggs (1-1, 9.25 ERA) and junior right-hander Hunter Mason (0-0, 6.75 ERA) in weekend starts in 2019. Cameron Carver (0-0, 1.80 ERA) has two saves in his three outings, with Shane Daughety (1-0, 2.25 ERA) earning a midweek win.
Newcoming sluggers Nick Thornquist and Bryan Sturges have led the offense, with Thornquist hitting .481 (13-for-27) with seven RBI over six starts. Sturges has hit .323 with three doubles and sophomore centerfielder Jonathan Tapia has hit .375 with a homer, four RBI and two steals. Junior infielder Griffin Paxton has hit .367 – joining Dylan Rock with eight-game hitting streaks – with seven RBI. Rock had hit .370 with a team-best eight RBI. Shortstop Joshua Lamb owns six RBI.
Texas, under the direction of fourth-year head coach David Pierce, is coming off a 2018 trip to the College World Series. The Longhorns are off to a 6-2 start to 2019 and face Sam Houston State at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Disch-Faulk Field. The Longhorns have totaled a .252 average as a team, slugging .402 with six homers and 49 runs scored in eight games, stealing 11 bases and fielding .968 with 11 errors and seven double plays turned. On the mound, UT has a 2.62 team ERA in 72 innings, walking 23 and striking out 62. Austin Todd leads the team with a 12-for-32 start, owning two doubles, one triple and one homer, driving in 10 runs. Michael McCann has hit .333 with four doubles and five RBI, Ryan Reynolds has hit .321 with three doubles and one homer. Eric Kennedy has two homers and seven RBI. Inn relief, Cole Quintanilla (1-0, 0.00 ERA) has appeared in four games with one save in 7.1 innings.
Texas leads the all-time series. 25-5, including a 19-3 mark in games played in Austin. The Longhorns have won five straight in the series with UTSA's last win coming in 2008 in Austin, 7-0.
