Griggs stars in relief of nightcap win

SAN ANTONIO -- Senior southpaw Bradley Griggs worked a career-best five innings and fanned a career-high six, leading UTSA baseball to a 12-3 win over Dartmouth to take a 2-1 lead in the four-game series, on Saturday evening at Roadrunner Field. 
 
UTSA (4-3) pounded Dartmouth in both games of the doubleheader, outscoring the Big Green 22-3 over the course of the twin bill. UTSA posted a 10-0 win in the opener of the day, a seven-inning result that evened the series following a 4-3 Dartmouth win on Friday. 
 
The Roadrunners plated six runs in the third, two in the fourth and four in the fifth for a commanding lead. Dartmouth plated single tallies in the fourth, sixth and eighth innings. 

UTSA starter Hunter Mason worked 1.2 innings, allowing two hits, before giving way to Griggs. Griggs (1-1) worked a career-high five innings, allowing two hits and one earned run, not issuing a walk and striking out a career-best six. Freshmen A.G. Yowell, Hunter Grimes and Zach Zeller each worked in relief with Grimes earning four outs and Zeller the last two of the game. 
 
Dartmouth (1-2) starter Chase Jeter worked 2.2 innings, allowing eight hits and six runs. Jonah Jenkins came on in relief in the third and worked 2.1 innings, allowing six hits and six runs, walking one. Trystan Sarcone also worked in relief. 
 
The Roadrunners were led at the plate by three-hit games from Nick Thornquist and Bryan Sturges. Sophomore Shortstop Joshua Lamb added three hits and three RBI, including a triple, with Griffin Paxton and Jonathan Tapia each notching a two-hit game. Bryan Arias, Dylan Rock, Taylor Barber and Shane Sirdashney each added knocks as each position starter collected a hit. 
 
UTSA and Dartmouth will conclude the series at 11:30 a.m. at Roadrunner Field in a game broadcast live on CUSA.tv. Both teams have yet to announce a starting pitcher. 
 
UTSA plated six runs on seven hits in the bottom of the third inning. UTSA got doubles from Paxton and Rock, and hits from Arias, Sirdashney, Thornquist, Sturges and Lamb each added singles. Taylor Barber was plunked by a pitch during the six-run outburst. 
 
Dartmouth hit a leadoff solo homer from Michael Calamari to open its scoring in the fourth. 
 
The Roadrunners added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning for an 8-1 lead. Tapia led off with a single through the leftside, scoring after Paxton split the gap in right-centerfield with an RBI double. After a productive out from Arias pushed Paxton to third with one out, Dylan Rock hung a sac fly to centerfield to score Paxton. 
 
In the bottom of the fifth inning, UTSA loaded the bases behind hits from Thornquist and Sturges and a walk from Sirdashney. Lamb then scored the trio with a triple into the left-centerfield gap. Lamb scored on an RBI single from Tapia for a 12-1 lead. 
 
Dartmouth plated a run in the sixth, getting a one-out single from Nate Ostmo, who scored after a sac fly to right. 
 
The Big Green plated a run in the eighth inning to cut the lead to 12-3.
