SAN ANTONIO – Dartmouth plated a pair of runs in the seventh inning to post a 4-3 win over UTSA baseball in the series opener of a four-game series, on Friday night at Roadrunner Field.
UTSA (2-3) and Dartmouth (0-1) traded single runs to enter the seventh in a 2-2 tie. The Big Green opened the seventh with a hit batter and three straight singles to break open the game and claim the series opener.
UTSA starter Karan Patel (0-2) suffered the loss in his second start of the year, allowing four runs on 14 hits in six innings, walking three and striking out six. UTSA used Hunter Mason and Connor Heffron in the seventh inning, with the duo stranding a pair of runners in support of Patel. Heffron worked 2.2 shutout innings with four strikeouts.
Dartmouth starter Cole O'Connor (1-0) spun a gem, working 7.1 innings, allowing two runs on eight hits, walking two and striking out three. After a one-out runner reached in the eighth, lefty Michael Parsons entered in relief, escaping the jam with one run allowed and a 4-3 lead. Max Hunter worked the ninth for his first save.
The Roadrunners were led at the dish by a three-hit game from Bryan Sturges, who drove in a run. UTSA also got two hits from Nick Thornquist, who doubled for the second time, and an RBI from Joshua Lamb. Jonathan Tapia, Griffin Paxton and Dylan Rock each collected hits.
The series will resume on Saturday with a doubleheader, starting at 1 p.m. at Roadrunner Field. Both games will be streamed live on CUSA.tv. UTSA will start junior righty Slater Foust (0-0, 0.00 ERA) in the opener of the twin bill.
The Roadrunners opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning. Thornquist led off with a double over the head of the leftfielder, scoring after Sturges smacked a two-strike RBI knock into left-centerfield.
Dartmouth immediately responded in the top of the third, getting a leadoff single to left from Trevor Johnson and a double down the leftfield line from Nate Ostmo. Michael Calamari then forced home Johnson with a hard-hit groundout to second base.
UTSA plated a run in the bottom of the fourth to take a 2-1 lead. Thornquist led off with a single up the middle, moving into scoring position after a single from Sturges. After Chase Keng legged out the back end of a double play chance to move Thornquist to third with one out, Lamb hung a sac fly to shallow right, with Thornquist just sliding in ahead of the throw.
The Big Green evened it up in the fifth inning, getting a one-out single from Calamari, who scored on a two-out triple into the right-centerfield gap from Steffen Torgersen.
Dartmouth had a scoring chance to open the sixth inning, getting a leadoff single on before Keng fielded a line-drive in leftfield and uncorked a missile to double off the leadoff runner at first base.
Dartmouth took their first lead of the game in the top of the seventh inning, getting Ostmo on after a leadoff hit batter. Calamari moved him to third on a single through the right side and Feinstein dropped an RBI single down the rightfield line to score Ostmo. Torgersen followed with an RBI knock to center to score Calamari.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, UTSA rallied, getting a one-out, five-pitch walk from Rock. Barber then greeted the new reliever with a double off the top of the wall in leftfield, pushing Rock to third. Thornquist then lined a sac fly to left, scoring Rock.
