DALLAS -- UTSA coach Jason Marshall has been awarded the Jerry Kindall Character in Coaching Award by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at the 2019 American Baseball Coaches Association Convention, in Dallas on Saturday morning.
Marshall, a native of Abilene, Texas, is in his seventh season as UTSA's head coach and his 19th season overall with the Roadrunners after serving as assistant coach and associate head coach for 12 years.
The winningest coach in UTSA by winning percentage, Marshall has paced UTSA to 181 wins and is the fastest coach in progam history to reach 100 wins. Marshall has seen 43 of his student-athletes drafted or sign a professional contact, including a program-best four in 2018.
"Coach Marshall is a very loving individual," UTSA sophomore shortstop Joshua Lamb said. "He applies his faith in all aspects of his life. He never forces faith on anyone and finds a way to connect with everyone, regardless of their personal beliefs. The thing I enjoy most is his ability to be a storyteller. He can find ways to relate life experiences to baseball and our daily challenges."
Named after longtime Arizona coach Jerry Kindall, the first person in NCAA history to win a national championship as a player and coach, who led the Wildcats to three titles and won the 1956 championship as the shortstop at Minnesota. He is Arizona's all-time leader in career wins, was the recipient of the ABCA's Prestigious Lefty Gomez Award in 1999 and is a three-time national ABCA Coach of the Year.
FCA Baseball presents the Kindall Award each year at the ABCA Convention to the college or high school baseball coach who best exemplifies the Christian principles of character, integrity, excellence, teamwork and service.
Past Kindall Award winners include Lynn Carlson (2018), Rich Maloney (2017), Dan McDonnell (2016), Brian Shoop (2015), Ray Hughes (2014), Rusty Stroupe (2013), Scott Berry (2012), Victor "Bubba" Cates (2011), Dave Altopp (2010), Carroll Land (2009), Elliot Johnson (2008), Mark Johnson (2007) and Kindall (2006).
