Track & Field to head to College Station for Charlie Thomas Invitational

SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA men's and women's track & field teams will travel to College Station to compete in the Charlie Thomas Invitational on Friday-Saturday, Feb. 1-2.

Hosted by Texas A&M and named in honor of the Aggies' former head coach, the two-day meet will be held at Gilliam Indoor Track & Field Stadium at McFerrin Athletic Center. The Roadrunners will face Arkansas (women only), Cincinnati, Houston, Rice, South Plains JC, Stephen F. Austin, Texas, Texas A&M, TCU and UT Arlington in the two-day, team-scored meet.

This will mark the fourth straight weekend the Roadrunners have been in action during the indoor campaign.

Last week at the Houston Invitational, UTSA enjoyed record-setting performances from Gary Haasbroek and Danielle Spence, who swept Conference USA Field Athlete of the Week honors.

Haasbroek won the heptathlon with an NCAA-leading 5,949 points to break the school, Australian national, meet and facility records. The freshman from Melbourne also leaped to a school-record mark of 25-1 ¼ (7.65 meters) in the long jump during the heptathlon.

Spence broke a 27-year-old school record with a gold-medal effort in the triple jump. The sophomore from Jamaica skipped to a personal-best measure of 42-11 ½ (13.09m) to eclipse the previous standard of 41-7 (12.67m) set by Portia Matthews in 1992.

The UTSA men own eight marks that rank in the top three on the C-USA performance list. The distance medley relay team of Luca Chatham, Zack Kovar, Caleb Devereaux and Monty Bertschy leads the league with their 10:08.06 clocking at the Houston Invitational, while Haasbroek and Jake McDaniel rank first (5,949) and second (4,904), respectively, in the heptathlon. Patrick Prince is second in the 60m hurdles (7.84) and Andre Douglas ranks second in the triple jump (15.59m/51-1 ¾). Standing third are Vasha Sheriff in the 400m (47.21), Haasbroek in the long jump (7.65m/25-1 ¾) and Vincent Perez in the weight throw (18.67m/61-3).

The women have five top-three marks in the conference. Spence tops the circuit with her school-record triple jump mark of 13.09 meters (42-11 ½) and Gabriyella Torres boasts the best pentathlon point-total of 3,661, while the distance medley relay squad of Colleen Gilbert, Creshaun Cresser, Stephanie Sauceda and Amber Boyd leads C-USA with a 12:33.56 clocking at the Ted Nelson Invitational. Jamiah Jackson ranks second in the 60m hurdles (8.50) and the 4x400m relay team of Darionne Gibson, Jackson, Cresser and Orla Brothers is third (3:48.91).
