Offense explodes in McLennan scrimmage

SAN ANTONIO -- Sophomore outfielder Chase Keng belted a homer and drove in five runs to highlight a 14-inning scrimmage for UTSA baseball vs. McLennan Community College, on Saturday afternoon at Roadrunner Field.

"Overall, we had a lot of good takeaways," UTSA seventh-year head coach Jason Marshall said. "Our overall offensive approach was better than our Lamar game a week ago. We got up 9-0 early behind some big hits and quality at-bats and we saw our top arms repeat success in consecutive weeks. It's the fall and over a 14 inning game you are going to have some breakdowns but we learned some things about our potential and also some areas of the game that we can improve to reach that potential. This could be a really good ball club and it will be fun to see what our ceiling might be come springtime."

A native of Deer Park, Texas, Keng shined in the 14 inning scrimmage on Saturday, which ended with a 25-17 UTSA win. The Roadrunners led 12-8 after nine innings in a game that saw UTSA get hits from 16 different players and earn 10 extra-base hits. Keng went 3-for-5 with a homer, double and five RBI.

Freshman outfielder Shane Sirdashney and senior Logan Swofford each added homers and a pair of RBI. Catcher Nick Thornquist drove in a pair.

Bryan Arias and Dylan Rock each charted three-hit games, with Rock adding a walk and two RBI. Garrett Moon went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and two RBI. Joshua Lamb had a three-run double and his hustle to leg out the back-end of a double play allowed Keng the chance at the two-out three-run homer.

On the bump, UTSA threw five scoreless innings to open the game and worked eight of the first 10 innings without allowing a run. Seniors Karan Patel, Tyler Giovanoni, Palmer Wenzel and Bradley Griggs each worked shutout innings. Hunter Mason fanned three in a team-high 1.2 innings. Connor Heffron and Ben Ostrominski each worked shutout frames.
