UTSA Track & Field inks Gary Haasbroek

SAN ANTONIO – UTSA director of track & field/cross country Aaron Fox has announced that Gary Haasbroek has signed National Letter of Intent to join the Roadrunners. Haasbroek, who is the second ranked junior decathlete in the world, hails from Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. He comes to UTSA as a true freshman and will have four years of NCAA eligibility.
 
"Gary is an exceptional athlete," said Fox. "He is the type of signee that can come in and compete for Conference USA championships right away and has the potential to be a multi-year scorer at the NCAA Championships. Gary has proven his ability throughout his development and we are excited he has decided to become a member of the Roadrunner family."
 
Haasbroek will represent Australia in the decathlon at the 2018 IAAF World U20 Championships in Tampere, Finland this coming July. Haasbroek currently holds a personal-best decathlon score of 7,723 points.
 
Haasbroek's personal-bests in the decathlon disciplines are as follows:
100m – 10.79
Long jump – 7.35m
Shot put – 12.22m
High jump – 2.00m
400m – 48.96
110m hurdles – 14.19
Discus – 36.07m
Pole vault – 4.80m
Javelin – 50.12m
1,500m – 4:31.61
 
Haasbroek joins fall signees Jamal Anderson (jumps), Orla Brothers (sprints/hurdles), Creshaun Cresser (sprints), Alexandria Gray (pole vault), Brooke Lomax (middle distance) and Marissa Martinez (distance) as members of the 2018 UTSA recruiting class.
