UTSA routs Old Dominion in series opener, 11-1

NORFOLK, Va. – UTSA racked up 17 hits, including five for extra-bases, en route to an 11-1 victory over Old Dominion to start a Conference USA series on Friday night at Bud Metheny Complex.

The Roadrunners (27-20, 13-11 C-USA) scored four times in the opening frame, once in the third, five times in the fifth and once in the eighth to cruise to the win.


Dylan Rock paced UTSA with a 4 for 5 performance that included two doubles, a pair of RBIs and three runs scored. Trent Bowles collected three hits, including a triple, while Chris Estrada drove in a game-best three runs.

Ryan Stacy, who posted three knocks, started the scoring in the first inning with a solo homer over the wall in right-center. After the Roadrunners loaded the bases, Estrada hit a triple to bring in all three runners to push UTSA out to a 4-0 advantage.


The Birds sent 11 batters to the plate in the seventh, which led to five runs.

Rock logged a two-run single in the panel, while Joshua Lamb also had a two-RBI single.

Nathan Alexander (3-1) worked five scoreless stanzas to earn the victory. The right-hander allowed only three hits and struck out three in his first conference start of the season. The bullpen trio of Palmer Wenzel, Karan Patel and Andre Shewcraft allowed only three hits and one run the rest of the way.

Luke Krantz (1-1) was tagged with the loss after yielding five runs (four earned) on six hits in three innings of work.

The second game of the series is slated to begin at 2 p.m. (CT) Saturday.
