Riley takes silver in decathlon to pace Roadrunners

HOUSTON –  Adrian Riley claimed second in the decathlon to lead the UTSA charge on the second day of the 2018 Conference USA Championships, contested at Rice University's Wendel D. Ley Stadium.
 
Multis
Entering the day with 4,077 points after five events of the decathlon, Riley closed the decathlon with a collegiate-best 7,576 points to earn silver in the event and eight team points. The point total ranks second on the UTSA all-time list and 13th in the NCAA. He opened the day with 796 points in the 110m hurdles after stopping the clock in personal-best 15.45. He then totaled 766 points with a discipline-winning hurl of 44.97m in the discus. He cleared 4.35m in the pole vault to earn 716 points, threw a discipline-best 55.46m in the javelin for 670 points before closing out the event with a 5:01.56 for 551 points in the 1,500m.
 
Jake McDaniel, a sophomore, entered the day with 3,496 tallies through five events of the decathlon and finished with 6,456 markers to place sixth and pick up three team points. The Houston native totaled 717 points in the 110m hurdles with a time of 16.14 and 443 points in the discus with a final distance of 28.93m. McDaniel claimed 522 points in the pole vault with a height of 3.65m, then collected 619 points with a PR of 52.02m in the javelin before closing the event with a discipline-best 4:43.43 in the 1,500m for 659 points.

Gabriyella Torres placed fourth in the heptathlon with collegiate-best 5,117 total points to earn five team points. Torres, who totaled 2,990 points through Thursday's first four heptathlon events, set a PR in the long jump with a distance of 5.79m to total 786 points. She then collected 596 points in the javelin with a throw of 36.30m before closing out the multis event with a PR of 2:25.90 in the 800m run.
 
Chase Whiting, owner of 2,635 points entering the day, placed 12th in the heptathlon with person-best 4,325 tallies. The sophomore leapt 4.99m in the long jump to earn 557 points. She then totaled 521 points in the javelin with a toss of 32.35m and 612 points in the 800m with a time of 2:36.60.


Throws
Vincent Perez placed ninth in the men's hammer throw with a best distance of 56.03m on his sixth and final attempt of the day. Mia Hicks earned a team point in the women's hammer throw with a hurl of 51.64m to place eighth. Faith Olszak (46.04m) placed 15th, N'Dia Warren-Jacques (44.51m) 16th, Maia Campbell (44.03m) 18th and Dallas O'Connell (40.40m) 22nd after their times in the circle.
 
Distance
Peter Sepulveda, a sophomore, ran a 35:25.33 to place 12th in the men's 10,000m run. In the women's event, Gabby Gonzales completed the 25 circuits in 39:52.78 to place 12th overall.
 
Championship schedule
The men's discus is Saturday's first field event with a 3 p.m. start time. Field events will continue into the 7 p.m. hour, concluding with the women's high jump. Track events on Saturday start at 5:30 p.m. with the men's 1,500m and conclude with the women's 3,000m steeplechase in the 9 p.m. hour.

The women's shot put opens Sunday's action at 3 p.m. The field events roll throughout the afternoon before wrapping up in the 7 p.m. hour with the women's javelin. The finals of the men's 4x100m relay starts the action on the track at 6 p.m. The 18 additional event finals will be contested over the next three hours before the women's 4x400m relay closes the championship.
 
Admission
All-session passes (all four days) will be sold on both Thursday and Friday with price points of $25 for adults and $15 for youth (ages 3-17). Individual day tickets are available for Saturday and Sunday with price points of $12 for adults and $7 for youth (3-17).
