UTSA finishes sixth at Conference USA Championship

TEXARKANA, Ark. — Led by a top-20 finish from Sean Meehan, UTSA finished in sixth place at the Conference USA Men's Golf Championship, as stroke-play competition wrapped on Tuesday at Texarkana Country Club (par 72/6,969 yards).

The Roadrunners carded a 296 in the final round and finished with an 885 to place sixth in a tight leaderboard, just four shots out of the top four teams that advanced to the match play semifinals on Tuesday afternoon. UAB claimed the top seed in match play with an 8-over-par 872, while Middle Tennessee (877), Charlotte (880) and Rice (881) snagged the other three spots, as second and sixth places were separated by a mere eight strokes.

UTSA finished three shots behind fifth-place North Texas (882) and was four ahead of Old Dominion (889) and seven in front of UTEP (892) in the 13-team field.

Meanwhile, Meehan ended up as the top Roadrunner by tying for 16th with a 4-over 220, marking the best conference finish of his career. The junior from San Antonio led UTSA in the final round with an even-par 72 that featured a pair of birdies on the front nine after opening the event with a 75-73—148.

Zander Lozano tied for 21st with a 6-over 222 (73-69-80), while Michael Rome tied for 24th with a 224 (75-75-74).

Jake Goodman carded a 225 (75-77-73) to tie for 26th and Chad Sewell rounded out the UTSA lineup in 31st with a 226 (73-76-77).

Mitchell Meissner of Rice captured individual medalist honors with a 5-under 211 (68-70-73).

The Roadrunners now will await word of potential postseason play when the field is announced during the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Selection Show at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 2, on the Golf Channel. The NCAA Regionals will be played on May 14-16 at six different sites.
