UTSA lassoes Wyoming Cowboy Classic crown behind Meehan’s win

CHANDLER, Ariz. — Sean Meehan won the individual title to lead the UTSA men's golf team to the Wyoming Cowboy Classic crown on Tuesday at Whirlwind Golf Club.

Meehan fired an 11-under-par 205 to capture individual medalist honors and lead the Roadrunners to their first team championship since the 2014 Rice Intercollegiate. The junior from San Antonio Johnson High School birdied his final hole, the 450-yard, par-4 18th, to seal his first collegiate victory by one shot ahead of McNeese State's Blake Elliott.

Meanwhile, UTSA turned in a 22-under 842 — the second-lowest 54-hole score in school history — to stake claim to the team title and finish four shots in front of runner-up Sam Houston State (846) in the 15-team field. The Roadrunners posted red numbers in all three rounds with a 7-under 281 and 9-under 279 on Monday, followed by a 282 on Tuesday in their final tune-up for the Conference USA Championship in two weeks.

"I am very proud of the team today," head coach John Knauer said after collecting the third team title of his tenure. "They came out and played with poise, and they competed hard all day. It's nice to see all of that hard work pay off with a tournament win, and this is a great momentum boost as we head into our preparation for conference."

One day after recording a 70-67—137, the seventh-best 36-hole total in UTSA annals, Meehan posted a 4-under 68 on Whirlwind Golf Club's Cattail Course (par 72/7,334 yards). His final round featured five birdies against just one bogey and he finished the event with a team-best 17 birdies, the second-best total in the field.

Meehan's 205 is a career best, bettering his previous low of 208 when he finished third at the Border Olympics last month, and it also is tied for the third-lowest 54-hole scorecard in program history. His win is the first by a Roadrunner since Zander Lozano took top honors at the 2016 Price's "Give 'Em Five" Invitational with a school-record 202.

"I'm really fired up for Sean," Knauer said. "This was a huge win for him. The 18th hole was playing very hard today, yet he finished with a birdie to win the tournament outright. He really played well in all three rounds and he's very deserving of this win."

Lozano and Michael Rome finished as part of a six-way tie for 11th place at 4-under 212.

Lozano, a senior from Fair Oaks Ranch, fired rounds of 71, 68 and 73 on the strength of 14 birdies during the event. The all-conference performer's 68 in the second round increased his program record to 24 sub-70 rounds.

Rome, a freshman from Austin, wrote down 12 birdies on his scorecard that listed a 68,74 and 70. His 11th-place effort was the fourth top-20 finish of his debut campaign.

Chad Sewell tied for 31st with a 1-over 217. The freshman from Conroe battled back from an opening-round 75 with his second consecutive 71 on the tournament's final day.

Jake Goodman rounded out the UTSA lineup in a tie for 40th with a 219 (72-73-74).

Adam House tied for 20th with a 1-under 215 (70-70-75) while competing as an individual. It marked the Rockwall native's second top 20 of his sophomore season.

UTSA's 842 was five shots better than third-place Wyoming's 847. Long Beach State and UC Davis tied for fourth with an 854, while Cal State Fullerton and McNeese State ended up in a tie for sixth (857).

The Roadrunners will return to the course on April 22-25 when they travel to Texarkana, Ark., for the Conference USA Championship.
