LAREDO — Sean Meehan and Jake Goodman are in contention for the individual title after the first day of the Border Olympics on Friday at Laredo Country Club (par 72/7,375 yards).
Meehan is tied for fourth place at 6-under par, while Goodman is in a three-way deadlock for 11th place at 3-under with 18 holes left to play.
Meehan, who is competing as an individual, fired a pair of 69s on Friday and his 36-hole total of 138 is just two shots off the pace of 8-under 136 set by the Sam Houston State pair of Camden DeBonis and William Holcomb. Meehan registered a tournament-best 13 birdies in his two rounds with seven coming in the afternoon, including a stretch of four straight as part of a 33 on the back nine. The junior from San Antonio Johnson High School now owns 10 career sub-70 rounds, which ties him with Bryce Alley for fourth on the school's all-time list.
Goodman opened the 54-hole event with a 2-under 70 that featured four birdies, three en route to a 34 on the back nine. The senior transfer, who also graduated from San Antonio Johnson High School, came back with a 71 on the strength of six birdies in the afternoon. His 141 is three strokes behind Meehan and just five off the lead.
Buoyed by a tournament-high 28 pars, Chad Sewell is tied for 43rd at 2-over 146. The freshman from Conroe carded a 71 in the morning that was highlighted by a trio of birdies before posting a 75 in the afternoon.
Zander Lozano is tied for 48th at 3-over 147. The senior from Fair Oaks Ranch bounced back from a 77 with a 2-under 70 in the afternoon that included seven birdies, four in a row on Nos. 8-11.
Michael Rome and Adam House round out the UTSA lineup in 83rd (71-80—151) and 87th (77-75—152), respectively.
The Roadrunners turned in rounds of 289 and 291 and are tied with Houston for 12th at 4-over 580, just nine shots out of the top five in a tight leaderboard.
Arkansas State leads the 17-team field at 9-under 567, followed by Campbell (569), Sam Houston State (569), Bowling Green (570) and ULM (571).
The final round is scheduled for an 8 a.m. shotgun start on Saturday.
