Roadrunners utilize a team-best 13 hits to defeat UTEP, 7-2, on Saturday

EL PASO, Texas  - Senior Lizzy Fox tossed her ninth complete game of the season and freshmen Ashlynn Walls and Celeste Borza had three hits apiece to lead UTSA to a 7-2 victory against UTEP (13-24, 3-9 C-USA) in Conference USA action on Saturday afternoon at the Helen of Troy Softball Complex.

Fox struck out three and allowed two runs on 11 hits in the win. The senior right-hander ran her record to 9-5 on the year with second league victory this season.

Meanwhile, Walls and Borza led an offense that pounded out a season-best 13 hits to help the Roadrunners (15-15) improve to 4-5 in league action. Borza also led UTSA in RBI for a second consecutive game with two in the series finale.

The Roadrunners never trailed in the third game against the Miners as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead after just one inning of the series finale.

Walls and Borza crushed RBI singles in the first inning after sophomore Celeste Loughman and freshman Victoria Villarreal, both singled to open the game.  A groundout to first base from junior Hailey Garza helped drive in UTSA's third run before the end of frame.

UTEP registered single runs in the bottom of the third and fourth to trim the lead to 3-2, but the Roadrunners got those back with a pair of their own in the top of the fifth.

Sophomore Rylee Rodriguez opened the fifth with her fourth double of the spring before Walls singled to left field. Borza then dropped a single into right field for UTSA's fourth run of the game. Senior Erica Sanchez added a single to the shortstop for the fifth Roadrunner run of the contest.

UTSA cushioned its lead with two more runs in the top of the seventh to claim the victory, 7-2.

The Roadrunners are set to return to the field on Wednesday, April 4 against Texas in Austin. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
