Riley claims decathlon win at Roadrunner Invitational

SAN ANTONIO – Adrian Riley won the decathlon with an NCAA-leading 7,437 points to pace UTSA at the second day of the Roadrunner Invitational, contested at the Roadrunners' Park West Athletics Complex on Friday.
 
Adrian Riley captured UTSA's first event title of the 2018 Roadrunner Invitational with a career-best 7,437-point total in the decathlon. The senior won nine of the 10 events overall en route to the second-highest point total in UTSA history. Riley added to his 4,085-point first day total with 770 in the 110m hurdles (15.67), 729 in the discus (43.18m), 659 in the pole vault (4.15m), 676 in the javelin (55.85m) and 518 in the 1,500m (5:07.35). The Jamaican's point total currently ranks first in both Conference USA and the NCAA.
 
Jake McDaniel placed second in the decathlon with 6,385 total points. The sophomore counted 2,847 points on Friday, including a high of 715 after clocking a 16.16 in the 110m hurdles, to add to his 3,538 tallies on Thursday.
 
Gabriyella Torres took silver in the heptathlon with 4,954 points. On Friday the junior scored 738 points in the long jump (5.63m), 545 in the javelin (3.58m) and 643 in the 880m (2:34.09) to go along with her 3,028 points from day one. Chase Whiting, a sophomore from Fredericksburg, placed third in the event, counting 4,235 points. Whiting scored 1,556 points on the day with a high of 609 in the long jump with a leap of 5.18m.
 
In the men's shot put Kelsey Benoit took a team-best sixth with a heave of 17.04m. Derek Fenton placed eight with a best distance of 16.15m, while Mike Zuniga came home 14th after he put the shot 14.48m.
 
UTSA's women's shot put efforts was led by N'Dia Warren-Jacques in sixth with a best distance of 14.94m on her opening attempt. Maia Campbell was close behind in seventh with a 14.36m. Cynthia Gonzales placed 12th after a 12.55m effort and Brenttany Birdow 16th with a 11.84m measurement.
 
Mia Hicks finished fourth in the women's hammer throw with a personal-best hurl of 52.68m. Faith Olszak was the second Roadrunner finisher in the event with a throw of 46.52m to place 12th overall, followed by Warren-Jacques (13th / 45.05m), Dallas O'Connell (16th / 43.96m), Lacee Barnes (20th / 38.67m) and Birdow (21st / 38.16m).
 
Sophomore Steven Thomas was UTSA's top men's finisher in the hammer throw with a PR of 53.39m to place seventh. Vincent Perez, a junior, was eighth in the event with a chuck of 51.86m on his third attempt of the afternoon.
 
The Roadrunner Invitational continues Saturday with the remaining field events beginning at 11 a.m. and the running disciplines starting at 2 p.m. with a rolling schedule (click HERE for a complete meet schedule).
