SAN ANTONIO – UTSA snapped a three-game losing streak on Tuesday night, as the Roadrunners toppled No. 30 Texas State, 7-2.
UTSA (8-10) held the Bobcats (13-5-1) without a hit for the first four innings while jumping out to a 4-1 advantage.
The Birds plated three runs in the opening frame, including one on Trent Bowles' double down the right-field line.
An inning later, Joshua Lamb tripled and then scored on a throwing error during a pickoff attempt.
Texas State picked up its first run in the fourth, as a wild pitch with the bases loaded allowed Derek Scheible to cross home plate.
The Bobcats added their final run in the fifth, but UTSA answered with two in the bottom-half.
Bowles led off the stanza with a single and then proceeded to steal both second and third bases. After Dylan Rock drew a walk, Chris Estrada lined a double to the wall in left, plating Bowles. Later in the frame, Lamb dumped a single into right field that brought in Rock.
The Roadrunners added one more tally in the eighth on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Tony Beam.
Lamb and Bowles finished with two hits and a pair of runs apiece. Bryan Arias also had two knocks.
Chance Kirby (1-2) picked up the win after hurling two perfect frames in a predetermined start. The right-hander retired all six batters he faced, including one with a strikeout. Derek Craft and Palmer Wenzel combined to pitch the final five panels, limiting Texas State to only three hits.
UTSA will continue its home stand this weekend, as the Roadrunners welcome Marshall to the Bird Bath for a three-game Conference USA series. The set opens at 6 p.m. Friday.
