Roadrunner men win UTSA Invitational; women fourth

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA men's track & field team won the season-opening UTSA Invitational, contested at the at the Roadrunners' Park West Athletics Complex on Saturday. The UTSA women placed fourth in the meet.
 
The UTSA men totaled 181 team points to defeat second-place Purdue by 21 points and third-place Texas Tech by 50 points. The Roadrunner women collected 96 team points and placed behind winner Purdue (233.50), Texas Tech (150) and Alabama (105.50).

 
Adrian Riley kick started the Roadrunners day with a second-place and personal-best effort of 7.49m in the long jump, despite passing on the finals. Dameon Creary placed fourth in the event with a 7.15m leap, Jahkwan Blackley sixth after a 6.92m distance and Andre Douglas (6.59m) 12th. Chase Whiting came home fifth in the women's long jump with a distance of 5.02m on her second leap of the day.
 
Mia Hicks earned four team points in the discus with her fifth-place hurl of 49.81m, while newcomer Lacee Barnes finished seventh and picked up two points after a throw of 48.31m. Both Hicks and Barnes' throws bested the previous UTSA school record, while Barnes' distance also set the Cayman Islands national mark. Kelsey Benoit placed fourth in the men's discus after a distance of 50.35m on his first throw of the event. Riley placed sixth with a final mark of 45.41m.
 
The high jump saw Gabriyella Torres clear 1.65m to place third. Quillan Haughton and Ty Anderson tied for third in the men's high jump with a height of 2.10m. Both Roadrunners cleared the height on their third attempt. Davante Edwards placed sixth a leap of 2.00m and Chandler Iturraga eighth with a 1.95m.
 
Kyle Real and Alex Brock tied for seventh in the pole vault with cleared heights of 4.42m. Real vaulted the height on his second attempt and Brock on his third.
 
Andre Douglas won the Roadrunners' first event of the day with a triple jump leap of 15.34m on his first attempt of the day.
 
The track events opened with the women's and men's 4x100m relays. The UTSA women's quartet of De'Stini Henderson, Jennifer Arinze, Olivia Esemena and Jamiah Jackson crossed the line in 46.17 to place third, while the men's squad of Kaleb Campbell, Byron Taylor, Jayden Bunting and Desmond Jefferson ran a 40.56 to win the event.
 
Jamiah Jackson led the Roadrunners in the 100m hurdles with a 13.83 to place third. Victoria Rausch was right behind Jackson in fourth with a 13.95. Gabriyella Torres crossed the line in 14.74 to place eighth.
 
Patrick Prince earned UTSA's third first-place finish of the day and fourth of the meet with his 110m hurdles victory. Prince clocked a 13.79, which is a personal-best and ranks as the second-best time in program history. Justin Gerbrecht (14.65) placed third and Jake McDaniel (15.88) sixth in the event.
 
Arinze rans a 55.04 in the 400m to place third and Darionne Gibson came home eighth with a 55.70. Vasha Sheriff won the men's 400m with a PR of 47.71. Byron Taylor placed fifth, crossing the line in 49.06.
 
Henderson was UTSA's top finisher in the women's 100m dash with a time of 11.73 to place sixth. She was followed by teammate Olivia Esemena, who clocked an 11.85, in eighth. Seven Roadrunner men competed in the 100m with Blackley leading the way with a fourth-place finish after posting a 10.72. Prince, Campbell and Bunting were within hundredths of Blackley, clocking times of 10.78, 10.79 and 10.83, respectively.
 
UTSA's women's 800m efforts were led by Colleen Gilbert's 2:20.68 to place fourth and Rian Rodriguez's 2:24.02, which was good for fifth. Jayela Slack stopped the clock in 2:29.41 to place eighth. Caleb Devereaux placed third in the men's race after posting a 1:56.50. Luca Chatham came home seventh with a time of 1:59.48.
 
Andrew Pirog was the Roadrunners' top finisher in the men's 400m hurdles, crossing the line in 54.05 to place second. Jonathan Boozer placed fourth in 55.09 and Ricardo Ramos seventh in 55.48. Christy Gilbert crossed fourth in the women's 400m hurdles with a 1:02.84. She was followed by Jamiah Jackson (1:04.15), Sierra Andres (1:04.88) and Rachael Grossman (1:05.42).
 
Campbell clocked a PR of 21.51 in the 200m dash and Bunting placed 10th with a PR of 22.52. Henderson and Esemena competed in the women's 200m dash, placing fifth and 10th, respectively with times of 24.06 and 24.46. Henderson's 24.06 was a personal-best.
 
Emily Voss led four UTSA women in the 1,500m with a time of 4:54.51, while Marcus Guajardo led the Roadrunner men with a 4:17.87.
 
The meet concluded with the running of the 4x400m relays with the Roadrunners entering two teams in both the men's and women's races. The women's quartet of Gibson, Ariel Watson, Sierra Andres and Henderson placed third with a 3:48.28 and the group of Grossman, Co. Gilbert, Esemena and Slack sixth with a 4:11.70. The men's UTSA 'A' team of Zack Kovar, Luca Chatham, Pirog and Sheriff posted a 3:18.12 to place third, while the 'B' team of Boozer, Devereaux, Ramos and Taylor clocked a 3:24.27 to place fourth.
