LAREDO — Sean Meehan posted the top scorecard and finish of his collegiate career and the UTSA men's golf team placed 12th at the Border Olympics, which wrapped up on Saturday at Laredo Country Club (par 72/7,375 yards).
Meehan tied for third place with an 8-under-par 208, his best 54-hole scorecard as a Roadrunner and one that is tied for the eighth-best in program history. The junior, who was competing as an individual and not in the UTSA lineup, followed a pair of 69s that he recorded on Friday with a 70 in the final round to finish in a tie wth Houston's Michael Perras, the 91st-ranked player in the latest Golfstat rankings.
Meehan wrote down five birdies on the final day and the San Antonio Johnson High School product finished the tournament with a team-best 18, the second-highest total in the 97-man field. The third-place finish bettered his previous career-best showing of 11th at the 2015 Price's "Give 'Em Five" Invitational, where he also carded his previous best score of 210.
Meanwhile, Jake Goodman tied for 12th with a 5-under 211 to lead UTSA to 12th in the team standings. The senior matched Meehan with a final-round 70 which featured four of his 14 birdies. Goodman, also a San Antonio Johnson High School graduate also turned in a 70 in the opening round before a 71 on Friday afternoon. His score-to-par was a season best and his finish marked the third top 20 of his final campaign.
Zander Lozano posted the Roadrunners' low round of the day with a 3-under 69 that was highlighted by five of his 14 birdies. The senior All-Conference USA performer finished in a tie for 33rd at even-par 216, climbing all the way back from a 77 in the opening round with a 5-under 139 over his final 36 holes. Additionally, the Fair Oaks Ranch native extended his UTSA career record for sub-70 rounds to 23.
Chad Sewell was one shot behind Lozano after registering a 1-over 217 to tie for 38th. The freshman from Conroe matched his opening round with a 1-under 71 on Saturday on the strength of five birdies, including four in a row on Nos. 9-12.
Michael Rome and Adam House rounded out the UTSA lineup in 88th (71-80-78—229) and 89th (77-75-78—230), respectively.
UTSA was 12th with a 4-over 868 (289-291-288), just one shot behind Little Rock and two behind 10th-place Oral Roberts.
Campbell won the team-title with an 843 ahead of runner-up Arkansas State (845), while Sam Houston State and ULM tied for third (855).
Billy Tom Sargent of WKU claimed individual medalist honors with a 12-under 204 (67-70-67).
The Roadrunners will return home to host the Lone Star Invitational on March 19-20 at Briggs Ranch Golf Club.
