UTSA softball blanks Yale; falls to Syracuse in six innings

HOUSTON – UTSA softball split its two contests, shutting out Yale, 5-0, in a well-rounded effort of hitting, pitching and defense in game one, while falling 8-0 [6] to Syracuse on Saturday in the Hilton Plaza Invitational in Houston, Texas.

UTSA will conclude the weekend against UNLV (11:30 a.m.) and Houston (2 p.m.) on Sunday.

The Roadrunners (7-4) received a solid outing from junior outfielder Bailee Baldwin, who connected for 2-of-4, tallying three RBI as UTSA took down Yale, 5-0. Overall, the Roadrunners pounded out five hits against two UNLV pitchers that combined for two strikeouts and three walks.

In the circle for UTSA, veteran pitcher, Lizzy Fox (4-2) threw 7.0 solid innings, allowing only four hits while recording three strikeouts.

Baldwin, who extended to a six-game hitting streak against Yale, put the Roadrunners on the board first when she doubled down the right field line with bases loaded, to bat in two runs. Sophomore Rylee Rodriguez added one more run for UTSA with a RBI single up the middle.

Freshman Ashlynn Walls cushioned UTSA's edge with her first collegiate home run down the right field line in the top of the fifth.

UTSA dished out one more run during the top of the seventh inning to take a 5-0 lead. With two outs, Baldwin hammered her seventh home run of the season to right center.

In the bottom of the seventh, a pair of Yale singles and a UTSA fielding error loaded the bases for the Bulldogs. However, Fox retired consecutive batters to halt Yale's momentum and end the game.

Yale scattered four hits and left six runners on base over the seven innings but a firm UTSA defense kept the Bulldogs from capitalizing.  The Roadrunners recorded 21 putouts and 11 assists against the eastern foe.

The 'Cuse (7-4) scored four runs in the opening frame to take a 4-0 lead, and would score two more in the fifth and two in the sixth to take down the Roadrunners, 8-0, in the second contest of the afternoon.

UTSA recorded one hit as junior Candice Hadd singled in the fifth inning. Freshman Madison Nelson made her fifth collegiate start, striking out two batters while not giving up a single walk.
