Roadrunner men fifth; women 11th through day one at C-USA Indoor Track & Field Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UTSA men's indoor track and field team sits fifth and the women 11th on the team leaderboard after the opening day of the 2018 Conference USA Indoor Track & Field Championships at the CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala.

Eight UTSA men and one woman advanced through the preliminary rounds in the track events to earn a spot in Sunday's championship fields.
 
Patrick Prince, a junior, clocked the day's fastest time in the 60m hurdles with a 7.94 to advance to the finals. Justin Gerbrecht joins Prince in Sunday's event final after posting an 8.18. Prince's time was a season-best, while Gerbrecht equaled his top effort of the 2018 campaign.
 
Brett Winnegan was the lone Roadrunner to advance to finals the men's 60-meter dash. Winnegan, who also plays running back on the Roadrunners' football team, clocked a personal-best 6.81 to finish seventh in the preliminary round.
 
Desmond Jefferson and Vasha Sheriff placed first and third, respectively in the 400m to punch their tickets to the final. Jefferson ran a season-best 47.81 and Sheriff a 48.09. Jefferson also advanced to the finals in the 200m with a time of 21.32 to place third in the prelim.
 
Luca Chatham and Zack Kovar earned their way to the finals in the 800m. Chatham was the fastest at the meet with a 1:53.60 and Kovar eighth with a 1:55.64.
 
Adrian Riley, a senior, sits second in the heptathlon with 3,209 points and freshman Jake McDaniel sixth with 2,775 points. Riley finished second in the 11-member field in the 60m dash, long jump and shot out, while McDaniel was second in the high jump.
 
UTSA totaled 10 points in the high jump with Davante Edwards, Jake McDaniel and Quillan Haughton scoring five, four and one point respectively. Edwards placed fourth with a cleared height of 2.06m, McDaniel and Haughton cleared 2.01m to place fifth and eighth. McDaniel cleared 2.01m on his first attempt and Haughton the height on his third. Edwards' and Haughton's leaps were season-bests.
 
Steven Thomas added three points to the Roadrunners' total with his sixth-place finish in the weight throw. The sophomore hurled the implement a personal-record 18.02m on his sixth and final attempt of the day.
 
Kyle Real contributed three points to the team score with his sixth-place pole vault finish. Real cleared a season-best 4.47m.
 
Riley and Winnegan each scored in the long jump to combine for eight points. Riley placed fourth with a leap of 7.25m for five points and Winnegan a distance of 7.19m to place sixth and total three markers.
 
Junior Gabriyella Torres picked up the UTSA women's first points of the championship with a fifth-place finish in the pentathlon. Torres totaled 3,645 total points, including career-best tying heave of 10.33m in the shot put. Freshman Chase Whitling placed 15th in the event with a 2,986-point tally.
 
Victoria Rausch advanced the Sunday's 60-meter hurdles finals with time of 8.67, which was good for the fifth fastest time of the day.
