Men claim runner-up finish; women sixth at C-USA Indoor Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UTSA men's indoor track and field team claimed a runner-up finish and the women took sixth at the 2018 Conference USA Indoor Track & Field Championships on Sunday at the CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala.

 
The Roadrunners men surged from fifth to second and the women from 11th to sixth in the second and final day of the championships. The men of UTSA totaled eight all-conference performances and a school-record on the day and the women four podium finishes.

The Roadrunner men netted a pair of gold medals via Patrick Prince and Desmond Jefferson. Prince won the 60m hurdles with a season-best time of 7.91. Jefferson took the took the 400m title after stopping the clock in personal-best 47.35, which ranks fourth on the UTSA all-time list.
 
The men also totaled five second-place finishes. Andre Douglas and Vasha Sheriff came home with silvers in the triple jump and 400m, respectively, while Adrian Riley took second in the heptathlon and Kelsey Benoit second in the shot put. Douglas, a freshman, earned his first all-conference honor with a leap of 15.49m. Sheriff clocked a 47.52 to make it a one-two UTSA finish in the 400m. Riley totaled a career-best 5,332 points, which included a PR of 8.77 in the 60m hurdles. Benoit earned his silver medal with a shot of 16.84m. UTSA's fifth runner-up finish came in the men's 4x400m relay. The quartet of Andrew Pirog, Sheriff, Byron Taylor and Jefferson clocked a school-record 3:11.22.
 
Luca Chatham earned a bronze medal in the 800m to round out the UTSA men to step on the podium. The junior form Dallas ran a 1:52.82.
 
Freshman Danielle Spence proved to be the top UTSA woman finisher with her second-place triple jump of 12.45m. The distance is a personal-best and ranks fifth in the UTSA annuals.
 
Ariel Watson, also a frosh, placed third in the triple jump, leaping a collegiate-best 12.38m. Victoria Rausch took home the bronze in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.60. The 4x400m relay team of Darionne Gibson, Jennifer Arinze, Sierra Andres and Jamiah Jackson took the Roadrunners' final podium spot, clocking a 3:43.52, which ranks third in program history.
