TUCSON, Ariz. — Zander Lozano tied for third place to lead the UTSA men's golf team to a tie for eighth place at the Arizona Intercollegiate, which wrapped up on Tuesday at Sewailo Golf Club (par 71/7,292 yards).
Lozano carded a 215 en route to his ninth career top-five finish to help the Roadrunners to a tie with New Mexico for eighth in the 18-team field that included seven nationally ranked teams.
Lozano entered the final day in a tie for fifth, as the second round was suspended due to darkness. The senior from Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas, closed out an even-par 71 on Tuesday morning and then posted a 70 that featured four birdies in the final round to move into the top three in the field of 92 players. Lozano, an All-Conference USA performer and NCAA Regional qualifier as a junior, led all Roadrunners with 11 birdies during the event and was just five shots off the winning pace of 210 set by Braden Bailey of Baylor.
Michael Rome tied for 19th with a 72-73-76—221. The freshman from Austin was steady with a team-high 35 pars that paved the way for his third top-20 showing of the season.
Jake Goodman tied for 45th with an 82-72-73—227, while Adam House and Chad Sewell rounded out the UTSA lineup in ties for 64th (78-83-71—232) and 88th (86-79-77—242), respectively.
UTSA posted an 891 for eighth, seven shots better than No. 38 San Diego State and 25th-ranked Santa Clara and just three strokes behind No. 15 California.
Arizona captured the team crown with an 862, followed by fourth-ranked Texas A&M (864), No. 5 Baylor (866), No. 42 Saint Mary's 875) and No. 32 BYU (883).
Collin Clark headlined a quartet of Roadrunners that competed in the Arizona Medalist Intercollegiate at nearby Randolph Golf Course (par 72/6,902 yards). The sophomore tied for second place in a field of 44 individuals with a 1-under 215. Clark fired a 3-under 69, which tied a career best, on Tuesday after posting a pair of 73s in the first two rounds on Monday. The Mansfield, Texas, native wrote down five birdies in his final round, including four straight on Nos. 6-9. His 215 was just three shots back of individual medalist Colin Kober of Baylor.
Sean Meehan tied for 30th after posting a 231 (82-76-73), while Tyler Walsh and Reynolds Carl finished 39th (81-83-72—236) and 41st (78-81-84—243), respectively.
The Roadrunners will be back in action on Feb. 16-18 when they travel to Humble to compete in the All-American Intercollegiate.
