Roadrunners conclude first day of Houston Invitational

HOUSTON – The UTSA track & field teams opened the annual University of Houston-hosted Houston Invitational at Yeoman Fieldhouse on Friday. Six individuals and four distance medley relay teams were in competition on the first of the two-day meet.
 
The UTSA men's DMR team of Zack Kovar, Skye Knight, Caleb Devereaux and Luca Chatham took gold in the five-team field with a UTSA season-best time of 10:31.89. The Roadrunners' 'B' quartet of Edgar Garcia, Mason Riley, Marcus Guajardo and John von Dohlen crossed the line fifth with a time of 10:50.46.
 
The women's 'A' DMR team of Colleen Gilbert, Darionne Gibson, Stephanie Sauceda and Amber Boyd clocked a Roadrunner season-best of 12:27.52 to place third. The 'B' squad of Charlette Janicek, Jayela Slack, Lynette Amaram and Sarah Estrada placed fourth with a 12:57.74.
 
Maia Campbell and N'Dia Warren-Jacques opened the Roadrunners' day in the women's weight throw as both finished with a final distance of 14.59m (47' 10.50"). Campbell finished the event in 10th due to only one fault in her three attempts compared to Warren-Jacques faulting twice.
 
On the track, Tadrian Rose made her season debut in the preliminaries of the 60-meter dash. Rose clocked a 7.82 to place 18th and advance to Saturday's semifinals. In the men's 60m, all four UTSA entries advanced to Saturday's semifinals. Freshman Kaleb Campbell led the way in eighth overall with a 6.93, followed by Patrick Prince in ninth with a time of 6.98. Devall Harris clocked a 7.18 to come in 21st and Jonathan Boozer a 7.22 to place 22nd.

The Houston Invitational continues on Saturday, Jan. 27 as the action gets underway with the women's shot put at 9 a.m., and the completion of the men's heptathlon is set to start at 10 a.m. The final day of running action opens with the semifinals of the 60-meter hurdles at noon and rolls through the women's and men's 4x400-meter relay at 5:15 p.m.
