DALLAS — Jake Goodman posted his first top-10 finish of the season to lead the UTSA men's golf team to a tie for eighth place at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate, which concluded on Tuesday at Royal Oaks Country Club (par 71/7,068 yards).
Goodman, a senior transfer from Texas A&M, tied for ninth place with a 3-under-par 210 to lead the Roadrunners. After opening with a 72 and season-best 67 on Monday, the San Antonio native carded an even-par 71 on Tuesday that featured four birdies, three as part of a 35 on the back nine. He registered a team-high 16 birdies, the third-best total in the field, and played the par fives at 5-under en route to his best finish as a Roadrunner.
Michael Rome fired an even-par 213 to tie for 21st. The freshman from Austin recorded a 73 that was highlighted by a pair of birdies in his final round after turning in a 74 and season-best 66 on Monday.
Zander Lozano tied for 44th with a 69-73-77—219 and Adam House tied for 58th with a 73-71-80—224, while Chad Sewell matched Rome's final round to close out a 226 (75-78-73) and tie for 64th.
UTSA posted a 7-over 859 (288-277-294) to tie with New Mexico for eighth in the 13-team field. The Roadrunners were three shots ahead of Liberty and 11 better than Charlotte, while ending up one shot behind Iowa and two back of No. 50 Pepperdine.
No. 7 and host Baylor captured the team title with an 827 behind individual medalist Cooper Dossey's 11-under 202 (66-67-69). The Bears were followed by 17th-ranked Arkansas (846), Minnesota (848), No. 14 Kent State (849) and Michigan (856).
The Roadrunners will return to action next Sunday-Tuesday, Oct. 29-31, at the Duck Commander Intercollegiate in El Dorado, Ark.
