HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Led by a runner-up finish from Zander Lozano, the UTSA men's golf team placed fourth at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate, which wrapped up on Tuesday at Hattiesburg Country Club (par 71/6,902 yards).
Lozano fired a 1-under-par 212 to finish in a tie with Stanton Schorr of Mercer for second place behind individual medalist Brad Carpenter of Missouri State, who posted a 2-under 211 (73-69-69). Lozano, who hails from Fair Oaks Ranch, turned in an even-par 71 in his final round after posting a 69-72—141 on the opening day. The senior All-Conference USA performer wrote down three more birdies on the final day to give him 11 for the event in registering his 11th career top-10 finish.
Michael Rome also finished in the top 10, doing so in his first collegiate event. The freshman from Austin Westlake High School carded a 1-over 214 to tie for eighth in the 75-man field. Rome, who had a team-high 37 pars during the tournament, recorded three birdies as part of a 34 on the back nine en route to a final-round 72 after turning in a 72-70—142 on Monday.
Fellow freshman Chad Sewell tied for 17th with a 216 in his Roadrunners debut. The Conroe native had three of his team-high 12 birdies en route to a 75 in the final round after carding a 68-73—141 on the first day.
Adam House tied for 25th with a 218 (73-71-74) and Jake Goodman was 51st with a 227 (76-76-75) to round out the UTSA lineup.
The Roadrunners posted an 8-over 860 to finish fourth, just one shot behind Southern Miss (859) and three behind Sam Houston State and UT Arlington, who finished tied atop the 12-team field at 5-over 857). Sam Houston State won a playoff to win the team title outright, while Missouri State rounded out the top five with an 864.
Competing as an individual, Collin Clark was 71st with a 234 (79-82-73).
The Roadrunners will return to the course next Monday-Tuesday, Sept. 18-19, when they travel to Choudrant, La., to compete in the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate.
