USTFCCCA bestows All-Academic honors upon Bermea, Brock, Perez

NEW ORLEANS, La. — Randy Bermea, Barrett Brock and Victor Perez all earned All-Academic honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), the organization announced on Friday.

Bermea, who graduated in May with a 3.36 GPA in criminal justice, won the 400-meter hurdles title at the Conference USA Outdoor Championships in May before advancing to the national quarterfinals at the NCAA Championships Preliminary Rounds. The senior from Harlingen added three second-place finishes in his specialty event during the outdoor season. He earned the Spring 2017 C-USA Spirit of Service Award and a 2016-17 C-USA Academic medal while also being named to the league's Commissioner's Honor Roll last spring.

Meanwhile, Brock, who also graduated two months ago with a 3.42 GPA in business, captured the pole vault crown at this year's C-USA Outdoor with a new personal record of 16-9 ¼ (5.11m), which was a four-inch improvement from his previous career best. He also finished second at the season-opening UTSA Invitational with a clearance of 15-9 (4.80m). He was a 2017 C-USA All-Academic honoree and four-time member of the league's Commissioner's Honor Roll during his career.

Perez earned the national honor for the second time in three years by virtue of his 3.59 GPA in electrical engineering. The senior from San Antonio placed third in the discus with a season-best measurement of 167-4 (51.01m) at the C-USA Outdoor Championships. He also won the hammer with a new program record at the season-opening UTSA Invitational and added three more podium finishes in his specialty event during the spring. Perez placed fifth in the weight throw at the C-USA Indoor (64-0 ½/19.52m) and registered a new school mark in the event with a toss of 64-5 (19.63m), which was good for a gold medal at the Armory Invitational. He finished his career as a two-time C-USA All-Academic honoree and four-time member of the conference's Commissioner's Honor Roll.

To qualify for All-Academic laurels, student-athletes must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and met at least one of two athletics standards. For the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event on the official NCAA list provided by TFRRS.org. For the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships.
