SAN ANTONIO — UTSA held on in the final outs of the game after a balk scored the go-ahead run to complete the sweep over Middle Tennessee on Sunday afternoon by a score of 10-9.
After UTSA (25-21, 13-11 C-USA) put up six runs in the fifth to lead Middle Tennessee, 8-3, the Blue Raiders plated four runs in the sixth and another two in the seventh to tie the score at nine.
In the bottom of the eighth, Kevin Markham scored the tying run on Trent Bowles' RBI double. Bowles made his way around the bases on a ground out to the pitcher and was 90 feet from scoring. The Blue Raiders made a pitching change and on the following at-bat, Drew Huff balked to bring home Bowles for the go-ahead run.
Southpaw Karl Craigie recorded two quick outs after surrendering a base hit to lead off the ninth but then loaded the bases on a walk and hit by pitch. Brad Jarreau attempted to bunt, but Craigie was quick on his feet and flipped the ball over to Mason George to end the game.
Craigie earned his second win of this series and improved 6-0 in his three frames of work. The senior allowed two runs on five hits and fanned one with two walks.
His counterpart, Devin Conn was charged with the loss in his three innings on the hill. Conn allowed five runs on five hits, walked four and struck out four.
Middle Tennessee (20-27, 7-17 C-USA) out-hit UTSA, 15-9, and it marked the first time this season that the Roadrunners defeated an opponent after being out-hit.
The Roadrunners scored early after Bowles blasted a two-run home, scoring Bryan Arias on the play. Middle Tennessee cut the lead in half with a run in the fourth and then took a 3-2 lead with another two runs in the top of the fifth.
UTSA's six-run fifth saw the Roadrunners bat around and produce those runs on three hits and four walks.
The Roadrunners will return to action on Wednesday, May 10, at Incarnate Word. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. at Sullivan Field.
